Tasting Notes

"The 2002 Dom Pérignon speaks to opulence and intensity. Rich, layered and voluptuous in the glass, the 2002 shows off its flamboyant personality with flair. Butter, cooked apple and tropically-leaning fruits mesh together effortlessly. Interestingly, with time in the glass the 2002 gains in freshness and energy without losing its essential opulence. The elevated ripeness of the year gives the 2002 Dom Pérignon distinctly Puligny-Montrachet leaning inflections. Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy adds that August that year was hot and very dry. Rain towards the end of the month and into early September freshened the vines and accelerated the final phase of ripening. This is yet another fabulous showing from the 2002, which continues to cement its reputation as a truly epic Dom Pérignon."

Investment Analysis

The obvious comparisons to make with the 2002 vintage are with the other great years of 1996 and 1990. As mentioned above, both of these wines trade at a significant premium to the '02. Although produced in large quantities, one of the key traits associated with Dom Perignon is that it is released on to the market ready to drink. If we look at both vintages, there is a clear pattern of growth associated with DP wines after they have been available on the market for a certain period of time, please refer to the graph below.

As we can see from above, both the '96 and '90 vintages experienced a significant upturn in price once they had been available on the market for nine and seven years respectively. Although released at a higher price than the previous vintages the 2002 has now been available for the past 6 years following its release in mid-2010. Whilst it has appreciated by 34% since that point, the price gap between the other great years for DP means there is significant potential for further growth over the next 5-10 years.

Dom Pérignon under the Hammer

A recent Christie's auction saw a lot of 10 bottles of Dom Perignon 1982 sell for $4,560 on a pre-sale high estimate of $3,600.

In another Christies Auction a 14 bottle Dom Perignon 90's vertical collection was sold. The price achieved of $33,880 was 21% over the top estimate (HK$22,000 - HK$28,000).

Summary Points

  • Highest rated vintage every produced; joint with the 1990 which trades at a 91% premium.
  • Upgraded in Oct '15 from 96 to 98 and has yet to move in price.
  • Previous bench mark vintages appreciated an average of 250% over a 5 year period following a period of flat to low growth after release.
  • 2002 was released in 2010.
  • Conservatively project 80-100% over the next 5-7 years.
We only have a modest allocation at UK market best and would therefore encourage our client base to contact their portfolio manager to secure this highly attractive option.
