Tasting Notes:

"Superb wine here, offering aromas of dark berries, tobacco, tar, blackberries and black cherries. It changes all the time and is very complex with hints of meat. On the palate it's full-bodied and very well refined, showing wonderful tannin tension and polished texture. It closes with an amazing finish that lasts for minutes and turns to pure fruit. Better in 2018 but a fabulous young wine to taste now. A modern example of the legendary 1997 but more elegant."

Background:

This Tuscan estate of around 55 acres was acquired by owners Rita Tua and her husband, Virgilio Bisti in 1984. They set about planting a mixture of Cabernet and Merlot and in 1992 produced their very first vintage. It wasn't too long after; that the estate started receiving praise and highly deserved accolades from the world's leading wine critics and enthusiasts alike. Its 100% Merlot offering - Redigaffi - quickly gained a cult-like status which was cemented when the world's pre-eminent wine critic Robert Parker Jr. awarded their 2000 vintage with a perfect score of 100 pts.

With the estate's other offers equally high in quality, it is of no surprise that the wines of Tua Rita are some of the most difficult to find. Especially when you consider the estate's total annual production is currently just 3400 cases, of which only 9,000 bottles are made of the highly regarded Redigaffi.

Investment Analysis

One of the key fundamentals associated with Tua Rita Redigaffi is minute production and lack of availability on the open market. The table below shows the number of cases listed over the last 90 days for vintages of comparable quality to the 2013 vintage.

What is important to clarify from the above data is that based on the highly scarce availability of these wines, it can be difficult to track the precise market value. The prices listed for the best vintages are often taken from listings that occurred 6-12 months + prior to now. This very low availability for the best vintages following a period of 5 years+ on the market ensures buyers are prepared to pay premium for OWC stock.

Since the first release in 1994, vintages currently average a 95 points score; the average trading price for these is currently £2,400 per 12 with the higher scored vintages (96 and above) averaging £4,186.80.

The data above suggests that the younger vintages of this wine have the potential for 100-130% growth over the next 5-10 years.

This is demonstrated by the comparable 2006 vintage, which was released at a slightly higher price of £1,450 and has experienced 96.6% growth in 7 years.

  • One of the top performing estates over the past 3 years.
  • Low Production of around 750 cases per annum, significantly lower than other Super Tuscan estates.
  • Average trading price of older, similarly scored vintages @ £4,186.80 per 12.
  • Very low availability of wines 5 years after release ensures buyers are prepared to pay a premium for the best vintages; 2013 certainly falls into this category.
  • Appeal of Super Tuscan wines now extending beyond the 'usual suspects'.
  • Projected growth of 100%+ over the next 5-7 years.

We only have a modest allocation at UK market best and would therefore encourage our client base to contact their portfolio manager to secure this highly attractive option.
