Tasting Notes

‘’The year 2010 for Brunello di Montalcino is the greatest modern vintage of Italy’s most famous red wine region. Never have the wines been so profound in quality, character, and quantity from the best hillside vineyards of Montalcino.’’

‘’This is not a vintage to miss. It is as significant as the legendary 1997 vintage, not only for the great quality of the Brunellos made but for its historical greatness.’’

‘’Vintages like this don't come along very often. As I wrote, 1997 is a year that had such unique greatness of the 2010. However, the viticulture and winemaking of today can't be compared to two decades ago. The Brunellos of today are superior, especially in a great year like 2010.’’

‘The 2010 vintage made great wines. There is no doubt about it. This is why you have to buy some.'

JAMES SUCKLING: Brunello 2010 Vintage ‘A vintage of a lifetime’ Jan 2015

‘’On a more positive note, Brunello lovers have much to look forward to. The 2010s are shaping up to be excellent, and perhaps more than that, as long as the wines in bottle capture the magic they have shown in barrel’’

ANTONIO GALLONI, vinousmedia.com, 2014

‘The next four vintages promise outstanding results with 2010, in particular, possibly reaching iconic status. Montalcino has some great wines in store for us and the barrel tasting I did while visiting estates was nothing short of exhilarating. Rest assured: The hype and the buzz is not hyperbole.’

MONICA LARNER, Erobertparker.com, Feb 28th 2014

2010 - Investment Potential

The graph below shows the current trading prices of back vintages of Biondi Santi, Brunello.

Highlighted in red, are the outstanding and historic vintages from the Brunello region – the vintages of equal quality and reputation as the 2010.

Over the medium to short term (5-7 years) direct comparisons can be drawn against the current trading price of the 2001, 2003, 2004 which are currently worth on average over £1,000 per case of 12 which is more than 50% more than the opening release price of the 2010 vintage.

Given the supreme quality of the 2010 vintage and the global demand these wines will command, it would be safe to assert that the 2010 vintage has far greater price appreciation potential than vintages such as 2001.

By way of comparison, we would look to the similarly iconic 1997 vintage for the Brunello appellation in order to draw conclusions over the future long-term price potential. With the 1997 vintage at over £200 per bottle, being conservative we would suggest that the 2010 Biondi Santi has the potential to eclipse that over the long-term but in the least should double in value over a medium term horizon.

With only James Suckling having officially published hisscores and report on 2010 Brunello, it will be interesting to see the scores given by The Wine Advocate, The Wine Spectator and Antonio Galloni in the coming months. But James Suckling’s score of 94 pts eclipses the 91 pts he gave the most recent vintages he tasted, therefore marking it one of his highest ever scores to date.

Aromas of currants, fresh herbs and blackberries with hints of wet stones and licorice follow through to a full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. This is very tight and muscular. Needs at least four to five years to soften. The legend lives. 94pts
