Mouton Rothschild 2017 and Petit Mouton 2017 released

Renowned First Growth Mouton Rothschild has released the 2017 vintage of both its grand vin and second wine.

At €348 per bottle ex-negociant, the release price of Mouton Rothschild 2017 represents a 17.1% discount on the 2016. The vintage is coming out as a single tranche, with a 15% volume reduction on 2016.

The wine has enjoyed praise from many quarters. Antonio Galloni awarded it 92-95 points, while Neal Martin gave it 94-96 points, calling it “unashamedly classic in style”.

According to Liv-ex, its opening price is “quite punchy”, with a slight premium to the price implied by the fair value methodology. As such, buyers might instead consider the 2012 or 2014, which offer greater value.

The chateau has also released the 2017 vintage of its second wine, Petit Mouton. At €144 per bottle ex-negociant, the release price marks a 9.1% increase on last year’s price of €132. We’ve not seen many price increases so far during this En Primeur campaign.

According to Jane Anson, who scored the wine 91 points, it “doesn’t quite have the exuberant joy of most vintages, but is extremely well put together.”

Despite the price hike, the 2017 is still the cheapest Petit Mouton vintage on the market – 10.6% below the 2016 which has made gains over the last year. This price, plus a 40% reduction in volume, may make it an attractive proposition to fans of the Mouton label.
