Flurry of releases mark final stages of Bordeaux 2016

A burst of big-name releases at the end of this week represent a final surge of activity for Bordeaux 2016, which is entering its final days.

  • Clos Fourtet 2016 has been released at €82.80 per bottle ex-negociant, a 23.6% increase on the 2015 release price of €67.

  • Lascombes 2016 has been released at €57.60 per bottle ex-negociant, a 14.3% increase on the 2015 price of €50.40.

  • Canon Gaffeliere 2016 has been released at €66 per bottle ex-negociant, a 17% increase on the 2015 price of €56.40.

According to thedrinksbusiness.com, these three releases have ‘generally failed’ to set the campaign ablaze’, despite their favourable critic reception.

Elsewhere, and arriving to more fanfare, are:

  • Leoville Poyferre 2016, released at €66 per bottle ex-negociant, up 19.5% on the 2015 release (€55.20).

  • Ducru Beaucaillou 2016, released at €139.20 per bottle ex-negociant, up 16% on the 2015 release (€120).

  • Pichon Baron at €114 per bottle ex-negociant, an 18.7% increase on the 2015 price of €96.

  • Clinet 2016 at €72 per bottle ex-negociant, a 20% increase on the 2015 price of €60.

Of these, two standouts are Leoville Poyferre and Clinet, with the latter just making Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ benchmarks, and representing a good deal with high praise from a number of critics such as Neal Martin (95-97) who called it ‘superb’.

Also released this week is Smith Haut Lafitte’s offering, at €76.80 per bottle ex-negociant, up 28% on the 2015’s opening price of €60.

The wine was well-received by critics (Neal Martin 96-98) and falls just shy of the trend line for Liv-ex’s fair value price, making the price, Liv-ex notes, ‘carefully balanced, just like the wine’.
