‘Glorious’ Almaviva released with high price point

Almaviva 2015 has been released at €78 per bottle ex-negociant, up 11.4% on the 2014 release price of €70. It is being offered by the international trade at £960 per 12×75, representing an increase of 20% on the 2014 release price of £800.

The pricing puts the wine above Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ trend line, so as Liv-ex notes, the release may seem ambitious, even though James Suckling – the only major critic to score the wine – gave it a perfect 100 points, commenting that it has a “glorious and complex nose”.

However, prices for Almaviva are not closely correlated to critic scores. Instead they follow the traditional pricing pattern for fine wine where vintages appreciate in price with the passing of time. But when 100-point scores are involved, age often becomes irrelevant. According to Liv,ex, then, “followers of James Suckling, therefore, may find reason to be excited by this year’s release”.
