Krug 2004 has ‘outstanding potential’

Krug has released its 2004 vintage, describing it as one of “outstanding potential”. Speaking at the wine’s launch event, Olivier Krug noted that the wine had been a long time coming, but the delays mean the wine has had ample opportunity to come into its own. “2004 has so much potential, we disgorged it three years ago, but it has only been since January that it has been revealing itself,” he said.

The wine, which took longer to open up and express its aromas than the house originally anticipated, boasts aromas of “ginger, candied citrus and quince”, thanks largely to delays in ripening due to late flowering.

“The 2002 is more in your face, you could see the muscles from the beginning and you know that it will expand,” said Olivier, who noted that the 2004’s evolution would “follow a direct line for the next 30 years”. He added that it has “so much of the elegance of Krug” that it reminded him of the 1998 vintage.

The 2004 bookends a trilogy of wines (incorporating the 2002 and 2003) from Krug – Olivier has said there will be no 2005 from the house. It’s available now for a recommended price of £220-£250.
