Liv-ex reveals 2017’s new entrants

Liv-ex unveiled its Power 100 Index in December, which charted the year’s top performers and revealed that 2017 was very much a Burgundy year. Now, the platform has examined the newest arrivals to the index – eight of the top 10 from, unsurprisingly, Burgundy.

There are four criteria that determine a brand’s score: year on year price performance, trading performance on Liv-ex (value and volume traded), the number of different wines and vintages traded, and the average price.

Burgundy performed well last year largely because of price performance. Liv-ex notes that high trading prices were also a factor for Prieure Roch and Francois Lamarche. For the first time these two brands met the criteria of trading a minimum of three wines or vintages and a total trade value of at least £10,000 entering at 23rd and 63rd respectively.

Outside of Burgundy, Bordeaux’s Canon – while not a new entrant – showed strong performance as prices jumped for the highly-scored 2015 and 2016 after their much-anticipated releases caused a flurry of market activity.
