Les Forts de Latour 2012 to be released for first time

Chateau Latour has revealed the wines it intends to release this month will include the 2006 Grand Vin and, for the first time ever, the 2012 Les Forts de Latour. The release will not be made until 21 March, so prices remain unknown.

The chateau has famously refused to release any of its 2012 Grand Vin or second wine after distancing itself from the En Primeur process after the campaign for the 2011s. It has technically released a 2012 before – third wine ‘Pauillac de Chateau Latour – but as thedrinksbusiness notes, the new announcement marks the first time a 2012 that “really matters” has been released.

Both the 2006 and 2012 are generally regarded as ‘off’ vintages, but both have nonetheless been met with positive reviews. Robert Parker’s in-bottle score for the 2006 was 95 back in 2009, while he gave the 2012 Forts 90 points in 2015, calling it “a beautiful, elegant wine”.

Traditionally, Latour’s releases have fallen slightly flat because of high prices charged at En Primeur, but the 2012 release marks a key point in the chateau’s decision to abandon the process. This is an opportunity for the estate to demonstrate sensible pricing, especially in light of the collectors who have been waiting for this release for some time.
