Australian wine brand Penfolds has launched its ‘2018 Collection’, which includes the 2014 Grange and 2016 Bin 707.

The latest Grange is the label’s 64th consecutive release and for the first time includes grapes from Wrattonbully, although chief wine maker Peter Gago says it’s still a classic Grange: “a wine that can stand on its own two feet throughout the world and would be capable of improvement year on year.”

Penfolds’ Bin 707 Cabernet, meanwhile, is “arguably not classically Cabernet”, says Gago, but “certainly classic 707”.

The collection also includes Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016 Magill Estate Shiraz, 2015 St Henri, 2016 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz among others.

Overall, five vintages, seven varieties and 15 regions are featured, including a selection of whites. The 2016 vintage of Penfolds’ top Chardonnay ‘Yattarna’ is now out, as is the 2017 vintage of the Reserve Bin A Chardonnay.

According to Gago, the 2017 is “up there with the 2009 Bin A. Time will tell. If so, then it’ll be tantamount to the finest Bin A released this century.”
