1997 Duhart-Milon Rothschild from Chateau Duhart-Milon Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Embarking upon a tasting of the 1997 Duhart-Milon Rothschild from Chateau Duhart-Milon Rothschild is akin to uncovering a nuanced chapter in the storied annals of Pauillac. In a vintage that demanded exacting standards from viticulturists and winemakers alike, this release emerges as a testament to the meticulous husbandry that the Rothschild legacy so famously demands.

An Era Defined by Precision

The late 1990s were a defining period for Bordeaux, with the 1997 season bringing its bouquet of climatic challenges. The result was a smaller harvest that necessitated ingenuity and precision — virtues that Chateau Duhart-Milon Rothschild holds in spades. The resulting vintage, while overshadowed by the blockbusters of '95 and '96, is one that true connoisseurs recognize for its early approachability and grace under duress.

Investing in Refined Elegance

The 1997 Duhart-Milon Rothschild possesses a seasoned character that suggests its evolution from lively youth to dignified maturity. It presents an intriguing investment opportunity for those who appreciate that fine wine need not always be about power and scale but sometimes about subtlety and finesse. Wisps of dark fruits merge coherently with undertones of cigar box and forest floor on the bouquet, manifesting a pleasantly evolved palate, typical of Pauillac's exemplary terroir yet imprinted with the unique signature of '97.

In terms of investment potential, this under-the-radar vintage provides an appealing option for diversifying portfolios with an offering that has aged gracefully, resonating with both collectors and those seeking singular tasting experiences.

In sum, the 1997 Duhart-Milon Rothschild stands as a vignette of resilience within the storied halls of Bordeaux history — one that yields not only sensory pleasure but also the intellectual delight in understanding its evolution and rarity within the market.

This impressively saturated dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers up copious quantities of sweet black currant fruit, vanilla, and minerals. Suave, with sweet fruit on the attack, medium body, ripe tannin, and a lush finish, it will drink well for a decade or more.

I recall this being quite disappointing less time I tried this in 2004 but here, certainly the nose has opened up with notes of blueberry, blackberry, graphite and a touch of fig with fine definition. The palate is high-toned, smooth tannins, racy acidity with blackberry, fig, dates and a slightly abrupt finish. Fully mature and there is a slight balsamic quality on the aftertaste. Drink now-2010. Tasted September 2008.
