2001 Domaine de Chevalier

By Chateau Domaine de Chevalier

2001 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux

In the pantheon of great Bordeaux years, the 2001 vintage often finds itself unjustly overshadowed by the millennium vintage that preceded it. However, for those with a savvy eye, and especially for the astute investors among us who appreciate finesse over flamboyance, the 2001 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier offers a resplendent showcase of elegant winemaking in a year that quietly excelled.

An Epochal Epoch: Crafting a Standout Vintage

The conditions of 2001 swept through Pessac-Leognan with an artist's touch, sparing Chateau Domaine de Chevalier's vineyards from extremities while granting enough differential warmth and cool breeze to coax the vines into producing fruit with superb balance. The result is a wine steeped in complexity without compromising its classic Bordeaux structure—a hallmark of truly collectable vintages.

The Taste of Time: Delectably Investment-Worthy

Twenty years on, the 2001 Domaine de Chevalier reveals layers of chargrilled earthiness intertwined with tobacco and truffles, eloquent of its terroir. On the palate, the wine offers ripe blackcurrants and plums, supported by a frame of finely-knit tannins which have mellowed beautifully with time. The acidity retains its vibrancy, affording this wine an admirable longevity for further cellaring or immediate gratification if so desired by oenophiles or collectors.

The finish is long and satisfyingly complex, leaving an indelible impression worthy of remark within one's portfolio or at a shared table amongst connoisseurs.

In Summation: Where Investment Meets Enjoyment

As a wine that garners respect for its subtle ascension to excellence, the 2001 Domaine de Chevalier stands as a sophisticated investment opportunity. It embodies an exquisite testament to the prowess of Chateau Domaine de Chevalier's vinicultural mastery during an under-appreciated vintage. Indeed, for those seeking both pleasure and potential appreciation in value, this wine proves to be an eminently astute addition to any distinguished collection.

Deep ruby/purple-colored with classic aromas of smoke, earth, black cherries, and creme de cassis, this elegant, layered 2001 possesses outstanding depth and richness as well as impeccable finesse, well-integrated wood, and a long, concentrated finish. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On horizontal. This has a light, innocuous bouquet that would benefit from a little more vigour. Undergrowth, some slightly mulchy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, cedar and tobacco to the fore, good acidity, nicely balanced on the austere finish. Not a long-term wine and I wish the nose had more chutzpah because the palate is very appealing. However much I want to like this more...I just think this could have been better. Tasted March 2011.
