1990 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The 1990 vintage of Bordeaux is often heralded as one of the most extraordinary years for the region, and amongst its numerous triumphs, the 1990 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy holds a position of distinguished calibre. As an observer and chronicler of fine wines over the decades, it is this vintage that continues to resonate profoundly within the annals of oenological majesty.

An Unparalleled Year for Pomerol

In examining the 1990 vintage specifically within the Pomerol appellation, we find a composition of benevolent weather patterns culminating in exceptional harvest conditions. These circumstances bestowed upon Chateau Trotanoy's vineyards a chance to yield grapes that would transform into wines of extraordinary opulence. The terroir’s rich clay over iron-rich subsoil provided an ideal platform for profound expression.

A Vintage Focused Appraisal

As one decants the 1990 Trotanoy, it unfurls with an almost hedonistic array of aromatics - plums and blackcurrants harmonising with earthy truffles and an undertone of fine cedar. On the palate, this wine from Chateau Trotanoy presents a marvellous tension between intensity and elegance - rich fruit and velvety tannins in a sumptuous dance, embellished by nuances of chocolate and an enduring complexity off-set by its still lively acidity.

Age has imparted wisdom to this wine; it retains a remarkable freshness that belies its year. To invest in a bottle of 1990 Trotanoy is to secure not merely a beverage but a slice of Bordeaux's history – a testament to what can be achieved when climate, craft, and soil sing the same operatic note.

In conclusion, when reflecting upon wine investment choices, the 1990 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy is a beacon for collectors and enthusiasts alike. A vivid demonstration of Pomerol's potential, encased in a single year's climactic ballet; it is without doubt one of the pinnacles among modern vintages worthy of meticulous consideration by any discerning investor seeking to enrich their collection with a touchstone of winemaking excellence.

Tasted at the Trotanoy dinner at Sketch in London. Tasting them side-by-side, it is clear that the 1990 Trotanoy is far superior to the 1989. It has a vibrant, ebullient, vivacious bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles, mulberry and crushed violets that blossom in the glass. The palate is tight at first but it opens up to reveal irresistible, velvety textured dark berry fruit tinged with thyme, mint and a touch of fennel. There is great density to the Trotanoy and certainly it remains youthful after 22 years, reluctantly evolving secondary aromas. This is a might Trotanoy that requires another ten years in the cellar. Tasted September 2012.

Tasted at the Trotanoy vertical in Hong Kong, the 1990 Trotanoy has long been a superior wine to the 1989. Here it has a gorgeous bouquet with blackberries, mulberry truffle and clove, demonstrating commendable vigor given its age. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, but quite firm in structure, robed in velvety tannins that gently grip the mouth. There is very fine density here, building towards a muscular finish that displays the style of Trotanoy with much more confidence than the 1989, which seems almost meek by comparison. It is now beginning to reach its peak so there is no need to cellar for longer, yet I can see this drinking well for another 15-20 years. Tasted November 2016.

Revealing considerable amber at the edge followed by dusty, loamy soil-infused, sweet plum, cherry, currant, and fig aromas, this is an elegant, smaller-scaled, medium-bodied, evolved wine with a herbaceous note that adds complexity. It only lacks vigor, power, and intensity, unexpected in a vintage that produced a lot of monumental Pomerols. Release price: ($1500.00/case)
