1998 Chateau Valandraud from Chateau Valandraud, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

In the realm of Bordeaux wines, certain vintages leave a lasting imprint on the collective memory of connoisseurs and investors alike. The 1998 Chateau Valandraud is one such vintage, emanating from the venerable Chateau Valandraud in the hallowed grounds of Saint-Émilion. Having matured with an exquisite grace, these bottles are a testament to the artistry of their creation.

Characteristics of an Exceptional Vintage

The harvest of 1998 in Saint-Émilion was greeted with much anticipation, where favourable climatic conditions bred a crop adorned with qualitative virtues. Herein lies the essence of this cherished vintage – its ability to encapsulate and convey the vibrancy and splendour of the year it was born.

On first approach, the 1998 Chateau Valandraud reveals a bouquet rich with dark plum and black currant scents, underpinned by hints of tobacco and truffles – a symphonic prelude that alludes to its deep complexity. The palate is met with an opulent tapestry of ripe fruit woven seamlessly with well-integrated tannins. It’s an ensemble delicate yet pronounced; a result owed to exceptional fruit selection spearheaded by the acclaimed winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin.

The structure of this wine holds one transfixed. One can discern notes suggestive of Saint-Émilion's chalky terroir, teasing out nuances that offer a profound sense of place. Oak aging has lent a whisper of vanilla and spice that complements rather than dominates – such is the subtlety of masterful ageing.

The Investment Potential

The investment appeal of the 1998 Chateau Valandraud lies not just in its extraordinary sensory qualities but also in its rarity and reputation. As time imparts further sophistication, these bottles become increasingly coveted by collectors and investors. Presumably always kept within meticulous cellars, they retain heroic potential for future appreciation.

In summary, this vintage represents an outstanding acquisition for those captivated by the illustrious lineage and peerless craftsmanship borne by Saint-Émilion's finest offerings. With each passing day, the 1998 Chateau Valandraud moves closer to legend – akin to a tapestry whose value amplifies as it weaves ever more into the grand narrative of wine lore.

Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the 1998 Valandraud has a sweet ripe bouquet with scents of dark berries, salted licorices, tobacco and cedar that is very intense and powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. Bizarrely, it almost seems Left Bank in style with cedar and tobacco notes infusing the black fruit, the mintiness suggesting a Pauillac! I love the drive here, the focus and the slight aloofness, a wine that demands respect and is worthy of it. What a great 1998: elegant yet intense, classy yet approachable. I envisage this offering another 10-15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted December 2016.
