1989 Chateau Branaire Ducru from Chateau Branaire Ducru, St-Julien, Bordeaux

The vintage of 1989 in Bordeaux is one frequently spoken of in revered tones amongst oenophiles and investors alike. Governing the landscape of St-Julien during this esteemed year was no other than the 1989 Chateau Branaire Ducru from Chateau Branaire Ducru, delivering an exhibit of winemaking finesse wrapped in the embrace of a generous climate.

A Testament to Time: The Essence of Elegance

As the seasons of 1989 unfurled, the winegrowers witnessed a confluence of ideal conditions. An amiable spring gave way to a hot, dry summer — optimal for concentrating flavours yet sufficiently moderated to prevent overripeness. This climatic ballet gifted us with grapes that were expressive, with optimal tannin maturity indicative of St-Julien's impeccable terroir.

Upon first taste, the 1989 Chateau Branaire Ducru from Chateau Branaire Ducru presents an intricate lattice of blackcurrant and cassis complemented by subtle hints of cedar and tobacco — a tapestry woven through the decades. One uncovers layers unspoiled by time: vibrant fruit notes persist while tertiary whispers of leather and sous-bois engage in an elegant dance on the palate.

An Enduring Investment

The structural poise of this vintage is palpable, a steadfast backbone that has allowed the wine to age gracefully whilst preserving its spirited expanse. The judicious utilisation of oak harmonises with the bramble fruits and adds whispers of spice without ever outshining the wine's inherent character.

As we consider fine wines for investment, it is critical to recognise those with staying power; wines that hold both history and promise. The 1989 Chateau Branaire Ducru continues to embody this credo astoundingly well, unfurling richness and vitality with each passing year; it remains one of the most compelling vintages for collectors who appreciate both legacy and liquidity.

In summation, the narrative of this wine speaks to both enthusiasts looking for sensual gratification and investors seeking wines with market endurance. It traverses that rarefied convergence where pleasure meets prudence; an asset not just in taste but also in time.

Approaching full maturity, the sumptuous, fleshy, dark garnet-colored 1989 is a top success for Branaire. This flashy wine exhibits sweet raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some lead pencil, cedar, chocolate, and new oak. The wine is medium-bodied, supple-textured, and luscious. A very sexy effort, this wine should be drunk over the next 10-12 years. Last tasted, 3/02.
