2007 Puligny Montrachet les Enseigneres

By Domaine Coche-Dury

2007 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France

The celebrated 2007 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon encapsulates a sublime confluence of time and terroir, etching its place in the cellars and hearts of discerning fine wine aficionados. As I revisit this prodigious vintage, I am reminded why the domaine has garnered such respect among connoisseurs and investors alike.

A Symphony of Climate and Craftsmanship

Harmoniously crafted, the 2007 vintage is a testament to the benevolence of Burgundy's weather that year—marked by a mild winter followed by an unseasonably warm spring, accelerating the vines' growth cycle. Nonetheless, the authentic finesse of Domaine des Comtes Lafon's viticulture artfully managed the early heat to preserve the piercing minerality and potent expression characteristic of Meursault Chardonnays.

In my recent tasting, I found that this particular vintage from the Goutte d'Or vineyard has evolved magnificently. The initial nose offers a whiff of toasted nuts which gracefully submits to seductive notes of ripe stone fruit and honeycomb. On the palate, one experiences an elegant tapestry woven with crisp acidity and rich layers of marzipan, citrus zest, complemented by an exquisite hint of buttery brioche—distinct markers derived from its tenure in oak barrels and bottle maturation.

Lingering Elegance: A Wine Investment Gem

With an undeniable edge for longevity, this 2007 gem stands out in investment circles. Its palette of complexity now offers subtler expressions akin to fine brushstrokes on canvas—the mark of true ageability. Such poise amidst structure serves as an invitation for further cellaring or as an impeccable choice for immediate indulgence.

As it breathes in the decanter, this 2007 Meursault Goutte d'Or leisurely unfurls its mellow golden hue alongside dimensions of flavour that fervently whisper their stories from Domaine des Comtes Lafon's esteemed vineyards. Insightful collectors will spot not just a sumptuous drink but a tangible asset worthy of patient nurturing amidst their portfolio. This vintage epitomises grace and endurance; qualities meritorious of both gusto and gilt-edged investments.

Scents of peach, honeysuckle, and orange zest on the nose of Coche-Dury’s 2007 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignieres lead to a palate whose subtly oily as well as creamy texture fits its dominant citrus oil and nut paste flavors. There is an invigorating and refreshing sense of energy and fresh citric brightness in the finish here to compliment the wine’s inherent richness, as well as a lovely sense of lingering, liquid floral perfume, and a stony undertone. This has the richness you expect of wines from neighboring Batard-Montrachet, but a great many of those lack this degree of elegance or animation. I would count on it to justify 6-8 years of attention. Jean-Francois Coche finished his 2007 Chardonnay harvest by mid-September, and of his whites were bottled in April. He characterizes the fruit as having been healthy, relatively high in malic acid, and easy to vinify, with alcohol levels (after very light but at this address routine chaptalization) between 12.5% and 13%. Coche is among many growers to not only draw the comparison with 2004, but to claim that this represents the only possible point of reference that even occurs to him. That said, he considers the 2007s slightly fruitier and more forward. Importers: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524
