A Testament to Patience and Precision

The vintage of 2012 was one punctuated by hurdles that demanded exactitude, patience, and a measured hand in the vineyard. Yields were curtailed significantly due to the vicissitudes of weather—a spring fraught with frost and hailstorms—extending an opportunity for concentrated flavours to develop in the surviving clusters. The result at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair was a triumph of quality over quantity; "an iron fist in a velvet glove" exemplified by its Aux Reignots vineyard.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignot has a very reduced nose, so much so that it was difficult eking much out of the glass. The fruit feels darker than Cathiard's Vosne en Orveau 2012 - black plum and blackcurrant leaf, just a touch of morel, but it remains anchored to the stemware. Possibly this is a case of insufficient aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. The acidity is nicely judged and imbues the wine with balance and freshness, although I would have preferred more detail and personality on the tea-leaf stained finish that shows bona fide class.
