2013 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France

As erudite collectors are aware, Burgundy is a tapestry of microclimates and terroirs, each imbuing distinctive characteristics to its wines. The 2013 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair emerges as a particularly intriguing specimen from a year that challenged Burgundian vintners with mercurial weather patterns.

A Vintage of Vigilance and Virtue

The 2013 vintage in Burgundy was one of endurance and meticulous toil. It presented vintners with a gamut of trials, including a lengthy, cold winter followed by an erratic summer. Yet, it was this very capricious season that has accentuated the pedigree of such winemakers as Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The domaine's assiduous craftsmanship is showcased through the vibrancy and structure found in their 2013 Vosne Romanee les Suchots.

This poised expression emanates refinement with its ruby hue and complex bouquet, redolent of cherry compote, seasoned oak, and whispers of clove. The palate is greeted with layered sophistication—red berries interwoven with earthy undertones, an ample acidity for balance, all culminating in fine-grained tannins. Remarkably for a vintage fraught with challenge, this wine reveals an uncanny poise and depth; quiet evidence of its resilient provenance.

An Intellect's Investment

For the astute fine wine investor, the 2013 Vosne Romanee les Suchots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair embodies an opportunity to secure a complex yet harmonious Burgundian masterpiece that reverberates with the narrative of its vintage. Its enigmatic journey from vine to bottle reflects not only the talents within Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair but also represents an emblematic slice of Burgundy’s storied winemaking history.

Entering into its apex drinking window, the 2013 Vosne Romanee les Suchots poses as an engaging option for those who both appreciate nuanced finesse in their cellars and recognise the potential for appreciating value in such unpredictable harvests. As it unfurls its chapters over time, I anticipate this wine will only continue to astound and delight, securing its place as one of Burgundy's most compelling tales from a vintage once dubbed 'a winemaker's year'.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots was offering strawberry pastilles and redcurrant jus scents on the nose, some creamy new oak still to be absorbed but everything seems to be in sync. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin, crisp acidity and fine mineralité. There is a bit of swagger and joie-de-vivre to this Vosne-Romanée, especially on the finish. Modern style but very well crafted, it should peak in around 7-9 years. Tasted September 2016.
