Bordeaux En Primeur 2017 Report

We are now on the cusp of the key Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur releases, you can download our comprehensive vintage report here along with expert opinion from our Global Sales Director, Aarash Ghatineh.

2017 is a very good vintage for Bordeaux particularly when you consider the question marks that loomed over the impact of frost on quality. Many excellent wines can be found in the Right Bank appellations of Pomerol and the slopes and plateau of Saint-Emilion. On the Left Bank, producers close to the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary and those in the northern Medoc escaped the frost and made some of Bordeaux’s finest in 2017 including Saint-Estephe, Pauillac and Saint-Julien.

16 members of the team from both UK and Hong Kong offices spent over a week in Bordeaux tasting 200 + barrel samples, here is a summary of our key findings:

  • Good to very good vintage overall.
  • Certain Pauillac, Pomerol and St Estephe estates are not far off 2015/2016 quality.
  • Excellent year for Bordeaux’s dry and sweet whites.
  • Last year’s frost caused 40% drop in total Bordeaux production.
    • Worst affected generally lower, poorer situated vineyards.
    • Estates with healthier finances were able use preventative measures and in many areas the second phase of budding was plentiful.
    • Pessac-Leognan, Pomerol and St Emilion among more affected.
  • A vintage where terroir is key, the top sites can be very proud of their achievements in 2017.
  • Closest vintage for comparison is 2014 but we expect the best wines to surpass the 2014 benchmarks.
