It’s fair to say that En Primeur 2018 is well and truly underway with TWA publishing their scores a week earlier than planned and at least one major release in the shape of Angelus. Excitement is certainly building as current releases point to prices being somewhere between 2015 and 2016. If this trend follows on to the Grand Cru Classés, this could be one of the most exciting vintages in recent years for investors.
Whilst critics have lavished extravagant scores and effusive praise across the board, it has also been talked about as a ‘heterogeneous’ vintage. When you consider there are more than 8,000 wine producing estates in the region and most critics taste more than 600 wines it’s understandable for there to be varied quality from top to bottom.
However, what is undeniable, is that across the ‘investment-grade’ wines which make up around 100 estates, scores are as high if not higher than ever before. The Wine Advocate in particular bestowing 29 wines with a potential 99 or 100 points. Make no mistake…2018 is a stellar vintage and perhaps the best since 2009.If the chateaux combine the undoubted quality with sensible pricing, then this is a vintage not to miss.
