French wines dominate 2017 Power 100 by price

Liv-ex’s Power 100, the annual list of the most powerful brands on the fine wine market, was revealed yesterday, showing that 2017 was a particularly strong year for Burgundy. Further analysis indicates it’s been a good year for French wines overall, with major wine regions in Frances dominating the top 20 spots on the list. Nine are from Burgundy, six are from Bordeaux.

The Power 100’s top price performer, Burgundy’s George Roumier, jumped 34.2%. Combined with its high trade value, this pushed it up to 29th place overall, compared to 116 in 2016.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has also edged its way into the top 10, while Canon and Rauzen Segla both appear in the top 20 for the first time, with critics commenting on improved quality in recent vintages.

Other countries contributing to the top 20 are Italy and the USA, with Screaming Eagle Winery and Dominus making appearances, and Italy’s Masseto up 23.4%, making it the country’s highest riser and best-ranking wine overall.
