Visiting Domaine Dujac

“It takes teamwork to make a dream work” – nothing could be more true for the next domaine we visited, started back in 1969 by Jacques Seysses and his American wife Rosalind. Pursuit of excellence is plain to see. Today Domaine Dujac is run by three brothers: Jeremy (born 1975), Alec (born 1977) and Paul (born 1980), with Jeremy’s wife as oenologist. In the year 2000, Jeremy started a small-scale négoce business under the Dujac Fils et Père label, and from 2017 there will be two new wines added to this range: Folatières and Combettes, both premier crus in Puligny-Montrachet . As we can see, there is a lot to look forward to! It is always a great experience to sample Dujac wines, especially once they have 10-20 years of bottle age, when their light colour and purity of fruit leads to a finish that is multidimensional and seductive. Quoting Jeremy, they focus on producing wines that capture the imagination of the people who drink them.

Domaine Dujac

Domaine Dujac, Morey-St-Denis, Burgundy, France 2016

At first slightly reduced (in a good way) with pure red cherry and raspberry and black plums refreshed by savoury minerals leading to a soft, juicy finish.

Domaine Dujac, Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru, Burgundy, France 2016

Feels like an older brother to the villages Morey, with similar depth and richness but darker berry fruit and bigger personality.

Domaine Dujac, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes, Burgundy, France 2016

Savage at first, lots of dried flowers dominated by ripe red berries fruit mixed together with an elegant “note fumée” and savoury mineral character. The palate is intensely fragrant and fresh, I like the proportion and depth of this wine, especially its juicy and fresh finish.

Domaine Dujac, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, Burgundy, France 2016

Aromatically intense and lively, there is lovely well-drawn Vosne character shining through, with ripeness of fruit and delicate spice married to mineral freshness. Very well constructed, the palate is fresh and intense with ripe tannins. Lovely sweet red cherry finish.

Domaine Dujac, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy, France 2016

Pure, forward and intense with a mix of mostly red fruit and dried flowers surrounded by delicate notes of toasted oak and crushed red peppercorns. There is lots of tension, especially in the mid-palate, leading to a long and elegant but powerful ending.
