A Gauntlet Thrown Down by Nature

As 2007 unfolded, it offered a mélange of climatic tumults—from a frosty winter transitioning hastily into an unseasonably warm April, then relapsing into an erratic summer. Despite such caprices from Mother Nature, Chateau Lynch Bages demonstrated remarkable finesse in coaxing a deeply stimulating elixir from its venerable vines.

The Tasting Journey: Navigating Complexity

The climatic melee endowed the 2007 Lynch Bages with a striking duality—a bright acidity paired sublimely with suave tannins that inherently promise both approachability and longevity. While it may not boast the immediate power of opulent years, this vintage instead offers a captivating spectrum of blackcurrant and cedar nuances, swathed in a medium-bodied, classic Bordeaux elegance. The wine unfurls gracefully on the palate with harmonious layers of dark fruit underscored by subtle herbal overtones and the merest hint of fine tobacco—a testimony to the skilled crafting behind this creation.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. A strong showing from Lynch-Bages which is matching a couple of First Growths. The 2007 has an attractive nose: well defined with blackberry, strawberry and briary. There is good mineralite here with pencil lead and cedar showing through – very Pauillac, very fresh. The palate is demonstrating very good fruit concentration with saturated ripe tannins, good acidity and structure, over-achieving on the succulent finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2011.

Delicious, supple and close to full maturity, the 2007 Lynch Bages exhibits a dark plum/purple color with some lightening at the edge along with tobacco leaf, bay leaf, black currant and earthy, loamy notes. Medium-bodied, supple and charming, it is best drunk over the next 7-8 years.
