Cos d'Estournel 1997
Tasting Notes Cos d'Estournel 1997
Forty percent of the harvest made it into this flattering, delicious wine with abundant charm and herb-tinged, blackberry and cherry fruit. A dark ruby color is accompanied by a medium-bodied, appealing St.-Estephe. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, it should drink well for 7-8 years.
First tasted blind for Wine magazine where it was the poorest wine in a flight of 1997's. Dry and austere on the palate. Dominated by wood and tannins. Hello fruits - are you in there??? Tasted blind again October 2003 at another 1997 mini-horizontal. Perhaps I was mean last time? This bottle had a similar hue to Pichon Lalande 1997. The nose is gentle, soft with a mixture of green pepper and tobacco. The palate still lacks some vigour. Good acidity, turning quite animally mid-palate. Moderate, perhaps even short in length. Still a below average wine though not as bad as our first encounter.
