2005 Corton Renardes from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

The esteemed 2005 vintage produced by Domaine Leroy from the hallowed grounds of Corton Renardes is a wine that firmly lays claim to a vaunted place within an investor’s portfolio. My long-standing relationship with the output from this iconic domain allows me to say that the 2005 iteration encapsulates the very pinnacle of what Burgundy aficionados adore about this auspicious terroir.

A Study in Elegance and Power

The year 2005 in Burgundy was heralded as one of exceptional climatic benevolence, spawning wines of both remarkable finesse and potent structure. What differentiates the 2005 Corton Renardes from Domaine Leroy is its beguiling combination of muscular intensity and a poetic elegance that dances across the palate. With tannins now seamlessly integrated, it reveals a sophisticated tapestry of ripe cherry, earthy undertones, and that inimitable hint of game which distinguishes the great Cortons.

An Epochal Vintage

Domaine Leroy's expert vinification has ushered in a symphony where each note plays with precision and grace. The warmth of the 2005 summer bestowed an extraordinary balance upon these grapes, illustrated by the resolute depth of flavour and a finish that stretches towards the horizon. Nuanced whispers of spice are threaded through the wine’s opulent fruit profile, ensuring a complexity that captivates the connoisseur’s senses.

Crafted with meticulous care by Lalou Bize-Leroy, the 2005 vintage transcends what many thought achievable in Corton Renardes. It stands not only as a testament to the mastery of Bize-Leroy but as an irrefutable benchmark against which subsequent vintages are measured.

Connoisseur's Conclusion

As one delves into the layers offered by the 2005 Corton Renardes from Domaine Leroy, one cannot help but admire its poised evolution over time. It serves as a profound example of Burgundy's timeless charm – robust yet refined, commanding yet sophisticated. To partake in such excellence is not merely an indulgence but a wise investment into a vintage that will continue to unfurl its splendour for many years to come.

The Leroy 2005 Corton Renardes smells of red cherry, charred wood, vanilla, and lily, but comes onto the palate particularly juicy as well as satisfyingly rich and expansive. This is silky in texture but bright and insistent in its sense of primary fresh fruit. A superbly long finish unites cherry liqueur, nutmeg, vanilla, chalk dust, and a savory meatiness, and the empty glass is sweetly perfumed with sensational intensity. I have never tasted a youthful Corton remotely so forward, perfumed, silken, or superficially sweet. Importer: Martine’s Wines. Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
