2007 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, St-Estephe, Bordeaux

The comet-like trajectory of the 2007 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur continues to arrest the attention of fine wine investors and enthusiasts alike. My intimate experiences with the vintages of this esteemed St-Estephe estate afford me a rich perspective from which to consider the nuanced narrative of the 2007 offering.

A Testament to Tenacity in Bordeaux

Indeed, the 2007 Bordeaux vintage was met with a challenging set of climatic conditions - a cool summer and early rains tested the mettle of winemakers. Yet, as if by some stroke of vinous alchemy, Chateau Calon-Segur transcended these adversities, presenting us with a wine that twinkles with charm and complexity.

The 2007 Calon-Segur articulates the persona of its vintage with a poised balance between subtle ripeness and vibrant acidity – an interplay reminiscent of Bordeaux's legendary staying power. Fine tannins provide a structured yet approachable frame upon which layers of dark fruits, tobacco and a hint of earthy truffle luxuriate. This particular vintage whispers perspicaciously of the finely honed skills deployed in its creation.

A Vintage Entwined with Potentiality

With time, the 2007 Calon-Segur has blossomed, revealing an elaborate tapestry woven with finesse. The bouquet unwinds elegantly from the glass, suggesting that it has reached a stage wherein its secondary characteristics have begun to emerge, chiming harmoniously with soft tertiary notes. It is a wine that encases the reflective aesthetic merit echoed in storied cellars and bespeaks its lineage from one of St-Estephe's most historic properties.

As to its investiture, the 2007 Calon-Segur offers investors not merely a liquid asset but something more akin to storied liquid artistry from Chateau Calon-Segur that can stand auspiciously within their portfolios. Experienced collectors will appreciate its complex identity—a manifestation of a time when nature and human tenacity wove an intricate vineyard tale.

In sum, while it may not vie for the thunderous applause given to more meteoric vintages, this offering from Chateau Calon-Segur earns our poised recognition—a notable conduit between wine's rooted tradition and the dynamic pulse of investment-grade viticulture.

Scores and tasting notes

An elegant, but decidedly earthy wine, the 2007 Calon Segur reveals attractive sweet cherry and red currant fruit intermixed with background soil undertones, and a round, spicy, medium-bodied, finesse-filled style. It should drink well for 7-8 years.

Robert Parker Jr - Wine Advocate #188

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Calon Segur has a lovely ferrous bouquet that is just pure Saint Estèphe, maybe a little rustic in style, yet there is presence, impressive intensity and plenty of charm. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, not a complex Calon Segur, and you cannot escape the fact that it fades sharply towards the finish. That said, there is freshness in situ, and despite it feeling blocky and broad shouldered, it is the kind of off-vintage Claret that bistros and restaurants love. Drink now because I cannot foresee any improvement in bottle. Tasted February 2017.
