1995 Ausone from Chateau Ausone, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

In the pantheon of Bordeaux's exalted wines, the 1995 Ausone from Chateau Ausone epitomises the quintessence of Saint-Émilion's distinction. Tasting the 1995 vintage is a journey through time, evoking a classic Bordeaux year that was marked by a balanced season conducive to producing wines of structure and longevity.

The Quintessential Vintage

The year 1995 was graced with relatively dry conditions, punctuated by just enough rain to soothe the vines. This yielded grapes with an impeccable balance of ripeness and acidity, which has translated beautifully into the glass over time. As investors seek out pristine examples of fine wine with provenance, the 1995 Ausone emerges as a compelling choice for discerning collectors. Nestled on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, Chateau Ausone harvested grapes that would culminate in a wine of extraordinary complexity and elegance.

A Tapestry of Aromas and Flavours

This vintage casts an intricate tapestry of aromas upon decanting; whispers of black cherries, truffles, and hints of cigar box are seamless precursors to the profound experience that ensues. On the palate, the ’95 harmoniously interweaves taut tannins with a sublime density of fruit — a hallmark of the great Ausone terrains that capture the very soul of Saint-Émilion. A finish resonant with graceful minerality affirms this offering as one of remarkable sophistication.

For those fortunate enough to cellar this wine, it has repaid patience with profound development. Where early youth offered tight-knit potential, maturity bestows a regal bearing. It is this evolution that endears the 1995 Ausone to investors — its crescendo from promise to fulfilment is a marvel among storied vintages.

In summary, while every sip reminisces the unique narrative of its harvest year, 1995 continues to bolster portfolios and captivate palates. Whether for immediate indulgence or long-term investment, the 1995 Ausone from Chateau Ausone is a noble addition to any assemblage of fine wines.

First tasted in November 1999 when it was still tannic and backward. hen blind again at the CECWINE horizontal. Deep garnet hue. A wonderful, opulent, sexy nose with pronounced vanillary oak, fruitcake and mocha. Palate is very smooth with good acidity. Fresh. Fine delineation and well knit tannins. Quite savory, with noticeable Cabernet Franc on the savory/meaty finish. Lovely wine. Drink now or over 5-8 years. Tasted September 2004.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate - Wine Journal

Ausone's extraordinary minerality is present in the 1995, yet there are more aromatics, a richer, more multidimensional palate impression, and a fuller texture - all with the terroir brilliantly expressed. The wine boasts a dense ruby/purple color and an emerging but tightly-knit nose of spring flowers, minerals, earth, and black fruits. Rich, with an opulent texture and surprising sexiness for a young vintage of Ausone, the medium-bodied 1995 displays exquisite balance between its acid, tannin, alcohol, and fruit. Although it is not yet seamless, all the elements are present for an extraordinary evolution in the bottle. This wine will age at a glacial pace for 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2045. Last tasted, 3/01.
