1990 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, St-Estephe, Bordeaux

The 1990 vintage in Bordeaux is widely acclaimed as one of the extraordinary triumphs of the last century, and the 1990 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur remains a testament to this splendid year. The wine is a scintillating jewel from the hallowed earth of St-Estephe, where the terroir commands respect with its deep gravelly soils and robust vine lineage. It behooves me to convey the singular essence of this vintage, with the 1990 hallmark radiantly defining its character.

A Vintage Laden with Enchantment

The vintage conditions in 1990 combined just enough warmth and sunlight with opportune rain, urging the Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend to ripen exquisitely. This generous climate gifted vintners across Bordeaux with an ample canvas to craft wines replete with depth, structure, and longevity; such is exemplified in this offering from Chateau Calon-Segur.

The Tapestry of Taste: Investment-worthy Elegance

Upon decanting, this elixir unveils a bouquet that weaves cassis with truffles and tobacco - a scent that can only be described as Bordelaise magic in a glass. An ensemble of harmoniously integrated tannins and sumptuous dark fruit flavours pave way for an exceptionally long finish, certifying the 1990 Calon-Segur as not only a profound sensory experience but also a prudent investment choice for connoisseurs and investors alike.

The lingering savour is a first-rate exhibition of what enthusiasts seek in peak-aged Bordeaux - the melding of power with grace. As such, it represents an asset that has matured to perfection yet promises further complexity for those who are patient.

Summation of Sensory Splendour

In sum, the 1990 Calon-Segur exemplifies the virtues that make fine wine investment so compelling: rarity, legacy and the promise of evolution. Imbibe or hold, it stands as one of the appellation's shining exemplars of a truly outstanding vintage - an opulent stitch in Bordeaux's rich tapestry that will continue to captivate and appreciate with time.

This is certainly looking like a typical 1990 Left Bank. Dark brick core with tawny rim. Just a lovely nose that you could almost describe as half Saint Estephe and half Pomerol

Neal Martin - Wine Journal Jan 2009

1990: An amber/orange edge to the color suggests full maturity, and the aromas and flavors confirm it. The medium-bodied 1990 Calon Segur exhibits sweet cedar, currant, herb, plum, and kirsch notes along with a dusty earthiness. It lacks the concentration of the finest vintages from the mid-nineties as well as every top vintage from 2000 onward. No doubt high yields and a lack of a strict selection have resulted in a wine that has consistently been on a fast evolutionary track. There is a sensuality and sexiness to it because of its full maturity. Very pleasant at present, it needs to be drunk up over the next 4-5 years. Release price: ($310.00/case)
