By Domaine Comte de Vogue
2008 Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue, Burgundy, France
The 2008 vintage offerings from the revered Pinot noir vineyards of Burgundy hold a very particular place in my recollections. Not every year can the vintners boast of conditions that bring forth such ethereal balance and precision as the 2008 Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue.
Effortless Elegance Amongst the Elements
The year 2008 was marked by climatic hardships that tested the acumen of Burgundy's vintners. A cool summer led to a late harvest, yet, the grapes achieved impeccable ripeness, a testament to the meticulous care and respect for terroir by Domaine Comte de Vogue. The result is a vintage that encapsulates the robust resilience of Musigny's vine stock and an almost contradictory finesse within the glass.
An Olfactory Odyssey
Upon first investigation, the bouquet astounds with an intricacy of ripe red berries, subtle earthiness, and whispers of finest woodland herbs—each scent a prelude to the sensorial symphony to follow. Just below the surface, there is the quiet suggestion of seasoned oak; not overpowering, but rather adding depth to an already complex aroma profile.
The palate confirms what the nose suggests: this is a wine that indeed speaks of its birthplace with unerring accuracy. In tasting, one experiences a splendid melee of taut red fruit wrapped in velvety tannins that glide effortlessly towards an enduring finish—a harbinger of this Grand Cru's admirable ageing potential.
A Veritable Investment for Discerning Enthusiasts
Collectors and investors alike should note, the 2008 Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is not merely a wine to be enjoyed; it's a story in every bottle. One that speaks of a year where nature's challenges were artfully transformed into triumph by Domaine Comte de Vogue. This wine rightfully holds claim to a distinguished position within any investment portfolio due to both its rarity and the exceptional experience it promises upon maturation.
A symphony composed within the seasoned cellars at Domaine Comte de Vogue, there is no question that this vintage stands as one of Musigny's most compelling renditions to date—surely holding promise for considerable acclaim as it gracefully ascends in stature and complexity through the coming decades.

The 2008 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is a wine I could smell all day. The explosive bouquet literally jumps from the glass, followed by deep, beautifully delineated layers of fruit. This shows terrific concentration and depth, dazzling finesse, and a nicely pointed, direct finish. It is an eternal wine. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. A brilliant career as a wine writer awaits long-time oenologist Francois Millet should he ever tire of making wine. Millet’s visual descriptions of vintages and wines are among the most colorful I have ever encountered. The truth is that these wines need no words at all; the quality of what is in the glass speaks for itself far more eloquently than words ever could. De Vogue’s 2009s are remarkable for their textural richness, depth and pure breed. In 2009 Millet started picking on September 9 in order to keep as much as freshness as possible. The fruit was 100% destemmed. New oak ranged from 15% for the Chambolle villages to 35-40% for the Bonnes Mares and Musigny Vieilles Vignes. The malos were on the slow side and for the most part did not begin until April 2010. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the 2009 Chambolle-Musigny and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru and as they were bottled just prior to my visit. I did have a chance to taste most of the 2008s. In many ways the 2008s offer better balance than the 2009s because the vintage characteristics play off the house style of textural richness, resulting in marvelous, totally complete wines. In 2008 the harvest began on September 27, quite a bit later than in 2009. A cool growing season was saved by perfect conditions that began on September 13 and continued through to the end of the harvest.
