Distinct Vintage, Distinct Expression

The tranquil progression of the 2007 season in Burgundy sidestepped dramatic climatic adversities, offering a window for meticulous harvest timing, strategically orchestrating the culmination of flavour and structure in the Clos de Tart. This attentiveness has sculpted a vintage that subtly defies the expectation of an often overlooked year. The celebrated estate, under the precise guidance of Mommessin, reveals an assemblage that is at once tender in its maturity – yet resolutely firm in its architectural poise.

A Convergence of Earth and Ethos

The nose exudes grace; red cherries and autumnal berries dance amidst whispers of earthy undertones and spice-driven warmth – a prelude to what unfolds on the palate. An exquisite tension between tannin and acidity orchestrates a ballet, gently chaperoned by savoury notes and a lingering minerality that acts as an ode to its Clos de Tart terroir. The wine’s elegant structure promises further evolution for those who dare to wait, yet it generously offers silent echoes of its varietal purity for immediate contemplation.

In summary, the 2007 Clos de Tart from Mommessin is akin to a tapestry woven with delicate hands – an exemplar of restraint and finessed complexity. It stands as an intelligent choice for the discerning investor keen on adding a Burgundy of intricate character and promising maturation trajectory to their portfolio. Tasted at the pre-dinner vertical to mark Sylvain Pitiot's retirement from the domaine, the 2007 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is more easy-going, more nonchalant than the 2008 with bright redcurrant and cranberry fruit mixed with a subtle marine influence; although, it does not have the thrust, the momentum of the ensuing vintage. The palate is balanced with plenty of sappy red fruit. There is something almost Oriental about this Clos de Tart - touches of Hoisin and spice developing towards the finish that has melted in recent years, and become more fleshier and corpulent. I would drink this now and over the next decade.
