2008 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Bordeaux's tapestry of vintage narratives is one sown with both grandeur and challenge, and the 2008 vintage of Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild is not devoid of either characteristic. Eschewing the typical archetype of a blockbuster Bordeaux year, 2008 was, instead, a vintage of elegance and precision which underscored the pedigree of Pauillac's terroir in an extraordinary fashion.

Sublime Sophistication: A Vintage Evaluated

A unique confluence of conditions shaped the 2008 harvest at Chateau Lafite Rothschild. An unassuming protagonist amongst its peers, this year delivered a jewel in Pauillac's storied crown. The remarkable September weather transmuted the thin line between peril and potential into an exquisite exhibition of vinous mastery.

The 2008 Carruades de Lafite manifests a certain restraint that enthusiasts recognise as a marker of true class. It exhibits a complex bouquet that deftly interlaces blackcurrant and pencil shavings with the subtlest hint of pencils - an echo of the gravelly beds upon which its vines flourish. The palate adorns itself with structured tannins and balanced acidity, both signifiers that this vintage was built for longevity as much as it aimed to enchant immediately.

Investment in Elegance: The Collector’s Reasoning

To encounter the 2008 Carruades de Lafite is to understand the nuanced investment landscape in the realm of fine wines. It's a statement piece; indicative of one’s knowledge in selecting a journey over an immediate destination. It marries finesse with evolution, suggesting that even amid global climatic challenges, brilliance can emerge.

As I reflect on this intricate dance between nature and nurture—the 2008 Carruades de Lafite stands as a testament to the masterful weave of patience and expertise in one of Bordeaux's most esteemed chateaus. Reserve now finds its match in approachability, further amplifying its allure to those looking to diversify their investment portfolio with a wine that pledges maturation and complexity on a horizon graced by time's generous hand.

In summing up, it is imperative to recognise that each bottle of 2008 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild arrives as an emissary from an estate renowned for crafting ceaseless classics. This vintage particularises a moment where circumstance gifted connoisseurs an admirable rendition of Pauillac poise—a suitable cornerstone for any discerning investor's collection.

I like the core of fruit and cedary, berry and plum character. It’s full bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a racy finish. Very well done for Carruades. Best after 2013.

A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2008 exhibits graphite, sandalwood, black and red currant, chocolate and damp earth characteristics in its elegant, medium to full-bodied, fresh, lively personality. It is a delicious, luscious, already evolved wine to drink over the next 15+ years.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The nose is more ostentatious than its peers, lifted blackberry, cassis and cedar aromas, a more hedonistic Pauillac along not dissimilar lines to Pontet Canet? The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins on the entry. Supple in the mouth, very smooth and seductive with a seamless finish. There is a touch of hickory developing on the aftertaste. Very fine and better than I expected given previous encounters. Tasted January 2012.

A brilliant second wine, the 2000 Carruades de Lafite (51.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.3% Merlot, 4.9% Cabernet Franc, and 1.4% Petit Verdot), aged in 10-15% new French oak, shows wonderfully sweet lead pencil shavings intermixed with an elegant black cherry and cassis nose. A wine of tremendous purity, medium body, and the tell-tale Lafite elegance, this is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.
