A Vinous Chronicle: 1999's Defining Moments

The growing season of 1999 was characterized by erratic weather, yet through skillful viticulture and precise selection, Château Lynch Bages harnessed this unpredictability. An early bloom followed by a rather cool summer set the stage for meticulous canopy management and exacting vineyard practices, ensuring grapes reached optimal maturity. The result was a harvest that preserved both the robustness and subtlety expected of this esteemed château.

Investment-worthy Elegance

Tasting the 1999 Lynch Bages today unveils a wine graced with equilibrium. While youthful vigour has given way to an elegant poise, there is a vibrant core that promises longevity. The inviting bouquet betrays hints of blackcurrant and earthy truffle – indelible signatures of Pauillac grandeur – while on the palate, layers of tobacco leaf fuse with ripe plum and a touch of cedar wood. The integration of tannins has been seamless, showcasing the adept influence of oak ageing which has enhanced rather than eclipsed.

For the astute investor or collector searching out the standouts from the fin de siècle period in Bordeaux, the distinctiveness of the 1999 vintage from Château Lynch Bages offers an alluring combination: it represents not only a memento from an epoch on the precipice of a new millennium but also an accomplished work from a producer that continues to intrigue with each passing year.

A Venerable Vintage Holding Courteously in Time

In closing, while we revel in the storied accolades of certain vintages that gleam brightly in our collective memory, there is merited reverence due to those such as the 1999 Lynch Bages which gracefully embody both their place and their moment. This remains unreservedly one for discerning collectors who value depth, subtlety, and maturity; elements that come together charmingly in this poised offering from Château Lynch Bages.

A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Medium-bodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate. Enjoy it over the next decade.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. Deep garnet core. This has a pert, ripe nose with graphite-laced blackcurrant, blueberry and a touch of dried fig. Good definition, blossoming with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, spicy and showing a healthy degree of ripeness, certainly more supple than previous bottles have shown, expanding in the mouth but then clamming up towards the more structured, austere finish. I am warming more and more to this Lynch Bages as it matures and doubtlessly represents great value for money. Tasted September 2009.
