1998 Le Petit Mouton
By Chateau Mouton Rothschild
1998 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux
In the pantheon of Bordeaux vintages, 1998 stands out particularly for the left bank where the cabernet sauvignon led the charge with sturdy shoulders. Within this context, the 1998 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild asserts its remarkable poise—a vintage that was both blessed by nature and meticulously crafted by human hand.
An exercise in balance and elegance
The 1998 vintage in Pauillac was a narrative of balance, with an unusually warm August followed by a mild September, creating optimal ripening conditions for the cabernet-centric blends of the appellation. The Le Petit Mouton, as if cradled by these climatic serendipities, presents a profile that is resolute yet laced with discernible finesse. The vitality of dark currant fruits intertwines gracefully with hints of cigar box and graphite—an ode to its esteemed terroir.
Poised for wine investment scrutiny
As fine wine investors seek out bottlings with both provenance and promise, the 1998 Le Petit Mouton emerges as a compelling proposition. It holds a musculature that is beginning to exhibit the sophisticated touch of maturity without having forfeited any of its youthful vigor, a duality that underlines its investment potential.
This Bordeaux display is not merely about fruit but a symphony where tertiary notes have started to contribute their own harmonies. It is a wine that moves with an almost paradoxical confidence - assertive yet never brash, much like an experienced actor who knows precisely when to command the stage and when to blend into the scene.
In summary, the 1998 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild offers a tapestry of flavor and complexity reflective of its storied origin. This Pauillac masterwork shows that it has journeyed gracefully since its inception, donning layers of maturity that heighten its investment allure and testifying to its enduring legacy—an eloquent chapter in the narrative of one of Bordeaux's most revered estates.

This estate is finally making a good second wine. The 1998 Le Petit-Mouton, a blend of 61% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits more of a Clerc-Milon-like character than Mouton. It offers good color, medium to full body, plenty of smoky cassis and licorice, and a soft, expansive, drinkable style. Anticipated maturity: now-2012.
Robert Parker Jr - The Wine Advocate, 22 April 2001
Moderate to light nose. Liquorice mixed with digestive biscuits on the nose. The palate: spicy black fruits with cassis. Saturated black tannins. Medium bodied. Accessible - angular. Medium length. Fine but not in the class of Carruades or Les Forts etc. Tasted March 2000.
