The Confluence of Climate and Craft
The year 1986 heralded an auspicious harvest in Sauternes. A serendipitous play between the Sauternes microclimate and the noble rot (botrytis cinerea) unveiled profound dimensions within this particular wine. Characteristic of its vintage, the 1986 from Chateau Rieussec distinguishes itself with an exceptionally harmonious botrytised intensity.
In this case, 1986 produced a vintage that is indisputably reflective of Chateau Rieussec's commitment to expressing the singular virtues of its terroir. This translates into an ensemble marked by lavish notes of apricot, honeyed figs, and toasted almonds—all interwoven with the subtle spiciness born from prudent oak aging. The wine's viscous caress on the palate is contrasted by an underlying vibrancy—a graceful dance between luscious, sweet fruit and refreshing acidity.

Scores and tasting notes
Tasted at Lafite-Rothschild, the 1986 Rieussec put in a supremely confident performance and in fact, looked more youthful than the 1996. It has a focused and energetic bouquet with scents of dried honey, lychee and slightly resinous, almost Azsu-like aromas. After three decades you have to admire the undimmed energy conveyed by this Rieussec. The palate is fresh and lively, with crisp acidity, very energetic with hints of toffee apple and quince infusing the honeyed fruit. I prefer this to the 1996: there is more animation and tension from start to finish, impressive length and a spicy aftertaste. This is simply superb and begs the question: Is this actually improving in bottle? I attach a plus-sign to my score just in case! Tasted July 2016.
Neal Martin - The Wine Advocate, 31 January 2017
The 1986 is a complex and elegant wine, with plenty of smoky almonds, peaches, and honeyed apricot fruit in the nose and flavors. In the mouth, the wine has a certain elegance, and perhaps not quite the punch one normally expects from Rieussec. Nevertheless, it is a compelling Sauternes that should age magnificently. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2010. Last tasted, 1/93.

A youthful golden colour. Moderate intensity on the nose of white flowers, almond, coconut and a touch of honey and yet it does not really grab you. The palate is full-bodied, well balanced with notes of honey, citrus lemon, and marmalade. Well-poised though not incredibly complex. Perhaps this will improve with another 5-8 years ageing. Perfectly drinking now but I would leave just in case it improves. Great depth and persistency. Tasted November 2006. Drinking 2012-2025.
