Reflective of a vintage marked by Mercurial climatic conditions which challenged many vineyards across Bordeaux, the 1997 Cos d'Estournel from Chateau Cos d'Estournel possesses a distinctive profile that makes it an intriguing subject for fine wine connoisseurs and investors alike. This particular year, while not hailed as the most legendary in the chateau's storied history, indeed delivered characteristics that make it unique.

Diverse Climate, Distinct Characteristics

The year 1997 was somewhat enigmatic; it was a vintage that defied expectations with early ripening due to a warm early summer followed by a tricky August. These conditions culminated in a harvest that brought both challenges and unpredicted successes. The resulting 1997 Cos d'Estournel offers an unexpectedly early maturity and presented an appealing option for those desiring a quicker to mature Bordeaux.

A Rare Vintage Offering Immediate Delight

In the glass, this wine presents an alluring garnet hue, lighter than one might expect from a typically robust St-Estephe. The nose is greeted with ripe red fruits layered with subtle hints of truffle and tobacco – hallmarks of maturity. One discovers in the palate a pleasing softness, round tannins, and moderately rich complexity reflecting its terroir amidst singular conditions; dark cherry and black currant notes are complemented by touches of cedar wood and spice.

Whilst the 1997 vintage may not command the same immediate recognition as some of its more illustrious predecessors or successors at Chateau Cos d'Estournel, it nevertheless holds appeal, particularly as a wine investment piece for those seeking a diverse portfolio. It is proof that in less vaunted years, gems can emerge – ready to be savoured without the protracted patience required of other vintages.

Integrating Historical Significance with Investment Potential

Understanding that particular years such as this offer unique opportunities for broadening one’s collection, the 1997 Cos d'Estournel stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Chateau Cos d'Estournel's winemaking prowess. It serves to remind one that each vintage carries its narrative – one which speaks to the ephemeral nature of winemaking and the ceaseless pursuit of perfection amidst the vagaries of climate.

With this bottle, investors find not just wine but history – an embodiment of what can be accomplished when experience meets challenge. In conclusion, the 1997 Cos d'Estournel from Chateau Cos d'Estournel remains a tangible slice of Bordeaux's storied winemaking tradition and exemplary of how every year tells a new tale in the tapestry of fine wines.

Forty percent of the harvest made it into this flattering, delicious wine with abundant charm and herb-tinged, blackberry and cherry fruit. A dark ruby color is accompanied by a medium-bodied, appealing St.-Estephe. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, it should drink well for 7-8 years.

First tasted blind for Wine magazine where it was the poorest wine in a flight of 1997's. Dry and austere on the palate. Dominated by wood and tannins. Hello fruits - are you in there??? Tasted blind again October 2003 at another 1997 mini-horizontal. Perhaps I was mean last time? This bottle had a similar hue to Pichon Lalande 1997. The nose is gentle, soft with a mixture of green pepper and tobacco. The palate still lacks some vigour. Good acidity, turning quite animally mid-palate. Moderate, perhaps even short in length. Still a below average wine though not as bad as our first encounter.
