The year 1990 is etched into the annals of Burgundian history as one that delivered abundance in both yield and quality—the former often elusive in this region of customarily modest output. Placed within an investor’s portfolio, this Bonnes Mares reveals not only a snapshot of climatic perfection but also stands testament to the enduring legacy of Domaine Georges Roumier's winemaking tenets.
A Vintage Graced by the Elements
In tasting, the 1990 Bonnes Mares unfolds with a beguiling expression of maraschino cherry and ripe strawberry soused in nuances of fine earth and haunting truffle. Time has woven tertiary notes subtly through this tapestry—an integration that elevates each sip to a study in balanced intensity. A unique weather series, with ample sunshine and an optimal ripening period, imbues this vintage with a textural finesse seldom paralleled.
Diligently cellared bottles bring forth a well-judged structure—a spine of minerality aligned with velvety tannins—typifying the beneficial serendipity of ‘90s environmental conditions which seasoned winemakers adeptly channelled into each barrel and then bottle.
In the realm of wine investment, securing exemplary vintages such as the 1990 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier proves a prudent course. As time marches on, it’s wines like these—steeped in the singularity of their vintage—that stand as linchpins in any serious collection, their resonance undimmed by passing years.Market price (USD)

The wines of this famed domaine, long known for its classic old style burgundies, do indeed improve with cellaring. The Domaine Roumier made some of the finest 1988s and their 1990s range from excellent to outstanding. In 1990, Roumier made only one cuvee of Bonnes Mares, blending his vineyard holdings from the Chambolle-Musigny side with those from the Morey St.-Denis side. Readers may remember that in 1988 there were 100 cases made of a fabulous Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. Although Roumier's 1990 does not rival his top cuvee of 1988, it is a terrific red burgundy, with a dark ruby/garnet color, a big, spicy, plummy, earthy nose, rich, opulent, muscular, full-bodied flavors that exhibit terrific extraction of fruit, and a spicy, mineral, iron-like finish with significant tannin. It reminds me of his 1985, but with much more stuffing and grip. Drink it between 1994-2008. Importer: Chateau and Estates, New York, NY.
