In the pantheon of Burgundian vintners, Domaine Meo-Camuzet stands resolutely, commanding respect and admiration. Our particular subject, the 2001 Vosne Romanee les Brulees from this esteemed producer is deserving of close examination—a vintage of nuanced pedigree and eloquence.
An Exemplar of the Millennial Vintage
The early naughties in Burgundy hailed climatic generosity—2001 delivered conditions that coaxed forth a poise and vivacity in the Vosne Romanee les Brulees. This particular vintage, coming after an illustrious 1999 and the challenging 2000, heralds the profundity of skilled artisanship navigating natures caprices. It exhibits a convergence of optimal ripeness and quintessential structure, elements sought robustly by collectors and connoisseurs.
2001: A Confluence of Terroir and Temperament
The 2001 Vosne Romanee les Brulees whispers of its terroir with a confidence born from deep-rooted vines ensconced in calcareous soils. The wine effuses aromatics redolent of black cherries and violets underscored by a sublime spiciness that only Vosne can showcase with such finesse. The palate—complex and resplendent—lays down layers of dark fruit fused with a minerality akin to wet stones after rainfall, and supple tannins that sketch the outline of potential longevity.
The affable elegance found within this vintage deserves acclaim; with each year that passes, it unfurls insights into the wine's evolving dialogue between fruit and earth, poise and power.
The Essence of Investment-Worthy Viniculture
For those who indulge in the alchemy of fine wine investment, this offering from Domaine Meo-Camuzet merits attention. Beyond its sensory pleasures, it holds a vintage-specific allure that adds a distinctive narrative arc to any sophisticated portfolio. Aromatically demure, the 2001 Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulees bursts on the palate with toasty spices and massively flavorful, jammy red cherries. Medium-bodied and satin-textured, this wine is both sexy and elegant. Its fresh, pure flavors linger throughout its long, suave finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2011. According to Jean-Nicolas Meo, this estate’s director and winemaker, “2001 is a good vintage, more strict and severe than 1999 and 2000, with more acidity and bite, less fat, and more austere. It has good cellaring potential because the balance of the wines is excellent.” Meo’s 2001s were particularly successful, with fleshy, fruit-filled personalities. For the most part, the firm, rustic tannin found in many of his colleagues’ 2001s (the majority of which are not recommended) was not detected in any of his offerings. That may be because Meo waited longer to harvest (as he states), extracted more delicately, or because he’s one of the few Burgundians to stir the lees of his reds (which builds flesh)... or a combination of the three.
