2009: A vintage that echoes perfect harmony

The 2009 vintage, notable for its concentrated fruit and immense complexities, culminates extraordinarily in this release. Rhone's climatic dance - the warm days and chilly nights - have conspired to present investors with a wine of incredible depth and longevity.

The high levels of tannin and ample acidity form the backbone against luscious bursts of black cherry and plum, accented by notes of rich dark chocolate and a whispering hint of truffle. Pepper spice pops elegantly through to provide veritable balance in this layered libation.

A closure akin to a standing ovation

The symphony concludes with an elegantly stretched finish that leaves a memorable, lingering encore of savoury earth and spicy wood. Reverberating with the prestigious notes of the 2009 vintage, this Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de la Janasse appears as a maestro in the concert of fine wine investment. This captivating composition viewed through the looking glass of time has inspired an orchestra of flavours that pay homage to its roots, playing on the strategic strings of judicious vinification and propitious climate. A standing ovation seems like just deserts for this noticeable performance.

This bottle of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes came across as being a bit over the top for my tastes. It's big and burly, without the joyousness of the Cuvée Chaupin, focused more on dark fruit and spice, plum and cola, with a side of star anise. Full-bodied and velvety, with plenty of richness and concentration, one could make the argument that it still needs more time, or that it's in an awkward phase, but one could also make the argument that it's just overdone.
