2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux
By Chateau Margaux
2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from Chateau Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux
The remarkable Chateau Margaux, revered for its excellence and consistency across vintages, proffers the 2007 Pavillon Rouge as a testament to the estate's resilient character even in less-celebrated years. This vintage, emanating from one of Bordeaux’s most grandiose addresses, embodies the finesse observed amidst the challenges of an uncharacteristically damp and cool summer of 2007. Indeed, true craftspeople shine not only in times of bounty but also when faced with adversity.
Expressions of Elegance in Unforgiving Climes
Any devotee of the winemaking arts will affirm that the inclement weather patterns of 2007 dealt a meticulous hand, necessitating exacting selection and mastery in vinification to coax forth any semblance of excellence. Here, the deft hands at Chateau Margaux worked diligently to present a blend where grace outweighs might, and subtlety prevails over exuberance. The 2007 Pavillon Rouge—a poised compatriot of its esteemed sibling, Chateau Margaux—offers an intricate array of red fruit aromas marrying beautifully with earthen undertones and a whisper of spice.
Investment-Worthy: A Vintage That Will Surpass Expectations
Connoisseurs tilting their gaze towards investment will appreciate that while the 2007 vintage does not boast the hedonism of more opulent years, it presents a unique opportunity. With its timely maturation and impressive adaptability, the 2007 Pavillon Rouge has evolved into a wine that intrigues and rewards patience. It stands as a beacon amongst Bordeaux's second labels—a phrase I seldom utter lightly.
For those seeking an uncrowded tableau within their portfolios, or indeed their cellars, the 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux resonates as a harmonious symphony amongst soloists. Far removed from immaturity yet promising continued development in bottle, this wine is adroit at striking chords of both accessible pleasure and potential gain.
In conclusion, it is important to remember that vintages like that of the 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux punctuate the narrative of wine with chapters of reflective depth rather than bombastic fanfare—offering discreet hedonism whilst contributing gravitas to the shrewd collector's assortment.

Scores and tasting notes
Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. There is little on the nose: touches of gravel and smoke but not much in the way of fruite. The palate is better with fine tannins, an attractive fleshy texture with good acidity. Harmonious and feminine towards the finish with dark cherries and a touch of cassis. It seems rather feral and earthy on the finish. Tasted January 2011.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Nov 2011
Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux has a crisp and well defined bouquet of black dusky fruit, sandalwood, bay leaf and a touch of warm gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and impressive structure. There is a linearity about this Pavillon Rouge, with a dash of white pepper towards the finish, as it clings to the mouth and says, I'm going to last longer than you think in bottle. This initially suggested a drinking window of around a decade, but now a decade on, it has other ideas. Tasted February 2017.
