2020 Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux

The heralded 2020 Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion stands as a vintage repleat with intense promise and poise. The youngest prodigy of the esteemed Pessac-Leognan appellation arrived amidst an atmosphere of climatic challenges, where precise viticultural mastery was necessary to achieve prominence. As I've appraised Haut Brion's lineage over the decades, the resilience of their terroir paired with sagacious winemaking has impressed repeatedly; this vintage is no exception.

A Terroir’s Triumph in a Turbulent Year

The narrative of 2020 within Bordeaux was one of triumph over adversity. Despite the vicissitudes of the growing season—featuring an imposition of wetness giving way abruptly to a searing summer—Chateau Haut Brion navigated with remarkable agility, thus ensuring grapes of superb quality. The wine elucidates a meticulous balance between attentive cultivation and the estate's intrinsic virtues.

An Ode to Artistry and Alchemy

Approaching the glass, the wine commands attention even before the first sip—it exudes a regal bouquet brimming with dark berries, subtle smoky cedar, and an infusion of refined earthiness that typifies Pessac-Leognan's finest offerings. On tasting, the tannic structure alludes to classic Haut Brion stance—firm yet finessed—with layers unfolding to reveal a mosaic of plums, savoury spices, and a haunting touch of graphite that leads into an enduring dénouement.

Investor veneration for Haut Brion is heartily justified—each vintage from this noble house engenders profound interest. Yet there's something singularly arresting about the 2020 vintage: it encapsulates not only the essence of its lineage but transcends typical expectations with an air of surprising approachability that suggests earlier drinking windows while promising extensive cellar longevity.

Connoisseur’s Synopsis

Deliberation on prospective wine investments must certainly consider the 2020 Haut Brion's propensity for nuanced evolution over time. It is imbued with characterful complexity that will assuredly reward those with foresight to grasp its latent potential—it is indubitably one of the investment oenophiles' estimable acquisitions this year.

Scores and tasting notes

The 2020 Haut-Brion is a blend of 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.5% Cabernet Franc, harvested from 7th to 29th September, with an estimated alcohol of 15% and a pH of 3.8. Opaque purple-black colored, it leaps from the glass with a first wave of vibrant black raspberries, ripe blackberries and mulberries scents, followed by a powerful core of warm cassis, dark chocolate and violets, before bursting into an array of crushed rocks, iron ore, tree bark and black truffles notes. The concentrated, densely packed, full-bodied palate is not in the least bit heavy, delivering a refreshing backbone of red berry and dried herbs suggestions, framed by seamless acidity and very finely grained tannins, finishing on an epically long, fragrant earth note. Simply stunning.
