2010 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac, Burgundy, France

Embarking upon the discussion of such a distinguished and storied vintage as the 2010 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac, one cannot help but anticipate a tasting experience marked by finesse and profound complexity. Burgundy, in this exceptional year, has presented us with a symphonic array of wines; among them stands this gem, infusing the serious wine investor's portfolio with not just value but also sensory distinction.

Nuances of a Stellar Year

The climatic ballet of 2010 consisted of plays between tension and harmony, challenges and triumphs that resulted in a vintage of remarkable balance in Burgundy. The wines from this year share an enchanting vibrancy and structure, characteristics that are boldly identifiable in the 2010 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac. Rigorous weather conditions earlier in the season threatened the yields, yet ultimately bestowed an endowment of concentrated fruit on the vines that persevered.

Poured into the glass, the wine unfolds like a tapestry woven with threads of rich dark cherries, earthy undertones, and whispers of sweet spice. There is an unmistakable minerality at play as well, reminiscent of the limestone-rich soils that cradle the roots of each vine in the Clos de la Roche vineyard. This unique terroir, alongside masterful winemaking by Domaine Dujac, has conjured a wine that marries intensity with elegance—a trait coveted by both collectors and aficionados.

An Investment in Taste and Timelessness

With its gripping tannin profile and agile acidity, the 2010 vintage signals immense ageing potential. One is advised to approach this wine with patience; to cellar it is to watch grandeur unfold. Its integration over time promises to finesse the already seamless texture and enrich the layers of flavour that beckon from within its youthful heart.

As a touchstone for Burgundy enthusiasts seeking to expand their portfolios with an investment-grade bottle, 2010 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac encapsulates the essence of a storied region’s capacity to transcend vintage variation with sustained quality. Here lies an offering that not only upholds but exalts the reputation of its lineage.

In summation, the 2010 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Dujac represents a beacon within Burgundy wine investment circles—its combination of structure, depth, and cellar longevity affirming its place as one of the standout collectables from this heralded vintage.

The 2010 Clos de la Roche wafts from the glass with sweet scents of tobacco, crushed flowers and spices. Tasted after the Charmes, the Clos de la Roche comes across as decidedly feminine, but there is plenty of weightless energy being held back, at least that is the sense I get today. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. Dujac fans will be thrilled with these 2010s. They are off the charts. The most difficult thing will no doubt be finding them. Jeremy Seysses reported yields down by 30-50% across the board, although his Morey blanc was down a whopping 90%. The poor flowering and wet summer resulted in loose bunches with a high amount of shot berries. The wines came in at 12 to 12.5% potential alcohol and were lightly chaptalized. Seysses used 80-90% stems for most of the wines, a little less for some, such as the Charmes and Combettes (around 70%) and more for the Chambertin and RSV (both 100%). Unfortunately, the 2010 Morey 1er Cru was too reduced to evaluate, so I will have to wait for another opportunity to taste the wine. I also tasted the entire range of 2009s. I will report on those wines in the April issue. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel.
