2009 Scarecrow

2009 Scarecrow from Scarecrow, Napa Valley, USA

In the year 2009, Napa Valley bore witness to a harmonious convergence of weather conditions, a serendipitous blend of sun and rain, warmth and chill that resulted in an exceptional vintage. From this auspicious year hails the 2009 Scarecrow, a majestic embodiment of the Valley's finest Cabernet Sauvignon.

A Vintage Moulded by Mother Nature

The slow bud break, due to moderate spring temperatures, set the 2009 growing season gently in motion. However, the rising heat during summer encouraged even ripening, which was beautifully balanced by cool nights preserving acidity in the grapes. The artistry of the vintage was vividly reflected in the extremely fine wines from USA, especially in the Scarecrow.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is an intriguing tapestry woven with threads of dense black fruit flavors, intertwined with subtle notes of cedar and tobacco. Decanting unravels this complexity revealing a plush, textured palate layered with ripe cassis and spiced chocolate nuances.

Fruit of Excellence and Endurance

The 100+ year old vines at J.J. Cohn Estate weathered this climatic dance to deliver fruit with exemplary concentration and depth. The meticulous selection at harvest ensured only the most mature and expressive grapes were chosen for the 2009 Scarecrow.

Pouring forth its rich ruby-pomegranate hues with every glass poured, it is no surprise that this wine boasts an impressive following among serious wine investors. Its beguiling character and multi-layered evolution continue to captivate discerning collectors worldwide.

In summary, the unique climatic narrative of 2009 gifted us with ONE of the finest US Cabernets in that era. As age graces this already magnificent wine, the 2009 Scarecrow from Scarecrow reinforces its deserved standing as a substantial and rewarding fine wine investment.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with huge dark fruit, scorched earth, menthol, licorice and smoke. The first impression is quite positive, but then the persistence on the mid-palate unexpectedly drops off quickly, as if there is a hole in the middle of the wine. In this vintage, the difference between the second label M. Etain and Scarecrow is much less evident than in 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Scarecrow's 2010s are gorgeous, and also quite a big step up from the 2009s. For more background on the estate, readers may want to revisit my introductory comments in Issue 198. Tel. (707) 963-3361
