2012 Chateau Haut-Batailley

By Chateau Haut-Batailley

2012 Chateau Haut-Batailley, Pauillac, Bordeaux

There is an abiding charisma to the 2012 Chateau Haut-Batailley from Chateau Haut-Batailley, a vintage that speaks with a refined but authoritative Bordeaux dialect. My perspective is sharpened by decades spent discerning the nuances of Pauillac, never have I been so intrigued by the unique expression of character found in this particular year.

Decoding The Distinction

Wedged between the more prominent 2010 and 2011 vintages, 2012 had been somewhat overshadowed. Yet true connoisseurs recognise that this year endowed the grapes of Pauillac with a subtle grace under climatic pressure. The milder weather, with its late blossoming warmth, has drawn out a certain restrained opulence from the vines at Chateau Haut-Batailley.

The complexities of the 2012 vintage make it an absorbing study for any serious investor. In the glass, the wine promenades a deep garnet hue, promising density and depth. To nose and palate, it offers an ontological narrative of its terroir: graphite veined through layers of dark currants and plums, hints of cigar box, and a stately touch of evergreen.

A Vintage With an Enduring Narrative

The tasting experience displays impeccable balance; tannins are present but politely reserved, allowing the refined fruit characters to converse freely with tertiary notes of leather and spice that one anticipates in a Pauillac of stature.

To appraise the cellar potential of 2012 Chateau Haut-Batailley is to acknowledge its duality - it carries enough weight and substance for longevity, yet possesses an accessible charm that beckons earlier enjoyment.

In conclusion, undoubtedly a wine of poise and pedigree, the 2012 Chateau Haut-Batailley represents an astute addition to any fine wine portfolio. Its ability to reflect both the strength and subtlety of its origins in Pauillac makes it a compelling proposition for investment and pleasure alike.

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2012 Haut Batailley has a superior bouquet to the 2011, with more complexity and mineralité, crushed stone intermingling with copious black fruit all with exquisite delineation and focus. There is a strictness here, perhaps borrowed from its half-brother, Grand Puy-Lacoste. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and focus. There is still some oak to be absorbed but there is plenty of substance on the stylish, sweet finish that is very seductive. This is an excellent wine from François-Xavier Borie, dare I say up there with the 2009 and 2010. It comes highly recommended. Tasted July 2016.
