By Chateau Clos Fourtet

2000 Clos Fourtet from Chateau Clos Fourtet, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

The millennium year was not only a milestone in time but also in the world of oenology, specifically in the hallowed echelons of Bordeaux. The 2000 vintage is a particularly noteworthy year for investors of fine wines, and among these, the 2000 Clos Fourtet stands as a crowning achievement from Chateau Clos Fourtet.

A Vintage Reflecting Excellence

The turn of the century brought with it climatic generosity, blessing the Saint-Emilion terroir with optimal conditions that led to one of the most exalted vintages. This propitious weather pattern bestowed upon the 2000 Clos Fourtet an intensity and complexity that speaks volumes of its pedigree.

Characterised by its robust tannins which have mellowed gracefully over time, the wine presents a luxurious bouquet of ripe blackberries and plums, intermingled with subtle hints of cedar and earthy truffle. These nuances are testament to the harmonious interplay between nature and nurture—a liaison underlined by meticulous vinification practices.

A Confluence of Sensory Elements

Upon sipping, the palate is greeted by a voluptuous texture that envelops gracefully, thanks to two decades of patient cellaring. Echoes of smoky oak are seamlessly layered with mature dark fruit characters and an undercurrent of savoury spice. The finish is lingering and studded with mineral inflections, typical of its Saint-Emilion provenance.

An investment in a bottle of 2000 Clos Fourtet is an indulgence in the tapestry of history woven into each sip—a history that has seen this vintage soar in acclaim and demand. Integrating the dimensions of a stellar heritage and wise maturation, this wine is not just an investment in liquid opulence but also in enological magnificence.

In summation, for both enthusiasts seeking to diversify their portfolio and connoisseurs desiring to experience an iconic vintage, the 2000 Clos Fourtet offers a sophisticated harmony between heritage and hedonism. Its compelling narrative as part of Chateau Clos Fourtet’s legacy, coupled with its present-day tactile delight, ensures its distinguished status within an investment-grade epithet. This vintage stands as an oenophilic milestone worthy of profound consideration and appreciation.

The first offering in what turned out to be a remarkable decade for this property, the 2000 Clos Fourtet was the finest wine produced here in many years, but it was subsequently eclipsed by the 2003, 2005, 2008, and 2009. The dense plum/purple-tinged 2000 exhibits notes of wet rocks, camphor, blackberries, and cassis. Full-bodied with tremendous density, it appears to have shed much of its tannin, and is through its adolescent stage. It should continue to evolve effortlessly for another decade.

The Clos Fourtet '00 has a backward nose that takes time to evolve in the glass. Very pure dark berried fruit with cassis, blueberry, blackcurrant and noticeable glycerine. The palate is full-bodied with succulent tannins that have softened over the last couple of years. Ravishingly smooth in texture and still carrying a little unresolved oak on the finish, I would afford this another 2-3 years in the cellar. Tasted November 2010.
