1996 Chateau Figeac from Chateau Figeac, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

Perhaps there are few vintages that convey the mastery of terroir by the viticultural artisans at Chateau Figeac as does the 1996 Chateau Figeac from this immaculate estate. Situated in the heart of Saint-Émilion, the provenance of this wine is as enchanting as its evolution in the bottle over the past quarter-century.

Historical Context and Climatic Grace

The year 1996 bestowed upon Bordeaux a challenging yet ultimately rewarding growing season. A somewhat capricious climate, with an arid summer followed by September rains, imbued the grapes with concentration coupled with a pronounced acidity—the cornerstone for longevity in fine Bordeaux. Recognising this, connoisseurs and investors alike regard it as one of the standout years for collecting and aging potential.

Composed Complexity: The Essence of 1996

The 1996 Chateau Figeac emerged splendidly from these conditions, articulating a tale of resilience and elegance. Its bouquet unveils layers of cedar wood entwined with tobacco and an earthiness reminiscent of autumnal forests after rainfall—a profile that encapsulates Bordeaux’s old-world charm. As it leads to the palate, there is an undeniable interplay between structure and suppleness, marked by dark berries and a subtle hint of truffle that lingers on through a finish that one might only describe as nobly persistent.

Indeed, it is the intricate arrangement of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc provided by the estate's diverse gravel terroirs which weaves such complexities into each sip—hallmarks of a wine with substantial ageing capability and allure for those seeking maturity without forfeit of vibrancy.

Investment-wise, the 1996 Chateau Figeac stands as a steadfast option—an asset underscored by character and scarcity. Its steady ascension in desirability amongst aficionados underscores its position as one of Bordeaux’s distinguished investments.

Closing Notes: Investable Elegance

In totality, diving into a glass of 1996 Chateau Figeac from Chateau Figeac is not merely sipping on a vintage; it is relishing a well-scripted anthology of nature's subtleties skilfully captured by human hands. For investors seeking to harmonize their portfolio with fine wines displaying poise and prowess, this vintage proves to be an excellent tableau for their cellar narrative.

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property from magnum, the 1996 Figeac has always been one of those "could have been wines." I agree with Robert Parker in that a difficult Right Bank vintage should have played into their hands given the Cabernet plantings. Certainly an effort was made by the late Thierry Manoncourt to counter the rain and 50% of the crop de-selected from the Grand Vin when picked between 30 September and 10 October. However, the bottom line is that this 1996 pales against other vintages. It is mature in color with some bricking on the rim. The nose is relatively simple with brown spice and a light marine influence. Medium-bodied with light tannin, it feels monochromatic, very linear and stern, without the fruit or the complexity to really see it through. Drink sooner rather than later. Tasted June 2015.
