By Chateau Valandraud

1999 Chateau Valandraud from Chateau Valandraud, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

The 1999 Chateau Valandraud from its eponymous estate in Saint-Emilion presents itself as a paragon of investment-worthy wines, teasing the edge of tradition and modernity with masterful grace. It is a vintage that represents not just the end of a millennium but also the maturity of an ambitious vinicultural venture – one where ingenuity meets the clout of Saint-Emilion terroir.

The Millennium’s Twilight: Crafting Elegance Against the Odds

The 1999 vintage was a challenge that Chateau Valandraud met with exceptional skill. Merlot thrived despite the climatic vicissitudes, yielding grapes that became the soul of this cherished wine. In a year less heralded than its predecessor, this 1999 vintage demonstrates how deftness in technique and understanding of land can transcend seasonal trials.

Opening a bottle releases a bouquet that suggests refined decadence – truffles entwined with blackcurrant and subtle oak nuances. On the palate, it unravels layers of complexity; plums and cherries dusky with age, yet vivacious, wrapped in silken tannins that whisper tales of excellent ageing potential. Harmony between fruit and structure is achieved seamlessly, drawing upon balanced acidity which allows for a palatable longevity.

An Exemplar of Fine Wine Investment

For fine wine investors, the 1999 Chateau Valandraud is a testament to the prowess of its vintage. Collectors who understand the nuanced evolution of Bordeaux wine will recognise its significance on both an experiential and financial calculus. Its sure-footed ageing potential and rarity underline its appeal as an astute addition to any connoisseur’s portfolio.

A consummate symphony of artisanal passion and discerning viticulture, this vintage instills confidence in its capacity to delight and appreciate over time – an asset that any investor would be remiss to overlook.

In closing, the 1999 Chateau Valandraud represents an insightful journey into what makes an exceptional vintage stand out –it is one to acquire considerately, savor leisurely, and invest in judiciously.

Tasted at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the 1999 Valandraud has a dark color and seems very youthful for its age. It is very concentrated and heady with copious dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a touch of camphor, crème de cassis and later, a hint of Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, rounded black fruit. It has a sweet core of black fruit tinged with charcoal, moderate acidity, quite caressing in mouth albeit missing the complexity that I was hoping for. Perhaps it will develop a little more personality with bottle age, as there is good substance here. Tasted December 2016.
