2001 Chateau Valandraud from Chateau Valandraud, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

As we venture into the cellars of time, the 2001 Chateau Valandraud from Chateau Valandraud stakes its claim as a cornerstone of investment-worthy Bordeaux wine. This vintage, nestled in the cradle of Saint-Émilion, is a testament to the finesse and fortitude of a year that had to follow the much-lauded millennium harvest. With foresight and meticulous care, the vigneron triumphed over climatic whims to create a wine of outstanding structure and appeal.

Defining Characteristics of 2001

The growing season of 2001, quieter than its immediate predecessor, was marked by a certain restraint in nature which culminated in wines possessing remarkable balance and longevity. Sufficient sunshine and mild weather favoured even ripening—conditions that are echoed in the elegant silhouette of this complex yet harmonious vintage.

The 2001 Chateau Valandraud showcases these attributes brilliantly: its rich hue, a prelude to the tapestry of blackcurrant cordials, leather bound books, and warming cedarwood spices that envelop the senses. The palate rejoices in silken tannins interlaced with dark cherries, truffles, and a hint of star anise—a splendid promise that unwinds on the tongue with the assured grace only found in the most well-crafted Merlot-led blends of Saint-Émilion.

Decanting an Investment

For savants seeking assets outside the realm of stocks and bonds, this embodiment of 2001 recalls why Chateau Valandraud continues to enchant collectors and connoisseurs alike. Its prodigious ability to mature has seen it transition seamlessly into its third decade, bearing with it the indelible mark of provenance and prestige synonymous with Saint-Émilion's hallowed terroir.

Investing in the 2001 Chateau Valandraud matches astute financial acumen with sensory delight. It's a discerning choice for portfolios seeking both capital growth and vinous grandeur. In tasting this wine, one is reminded that there are certain things in life that demand patience; fine wine is categorically one such pleasure.

Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the 2001 Valandraud is a vintage that I had tasted previously but had not impressed. Well, here it gave a totally different impression (paired blind against a superb 2001 Opus One incidentally). It has a deep color with very little ageing. The bouquet offers intense black cherries, mulberry, orange rind and cedar aromas that are vigorous and very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and superb tension. The texture feels slightly chalky, almost as if from calcareous soils, and you can feel the energy towards the vivid red cherry and raspberry coulis-tinged finish. This is only just beginning to show what it can do. This is equal to the 2000 Valandraud and might actually be the better long-term bet. Tasted December 2016.
