A Vintage Speaks: The Distinctive 1995 Musigny Grand Cru Narrative
In this particular year, the weather gods smiled upon Burgundy, yielding conditions favourable for crafting wines of profound structure and longevity. The 1995 season started with a mild winter, followed by an early spring that spurred on an expedited yet even bud break. The summer progressed with moderate warmth, skirting the excesses, and allowed for measured ripening. A composed harvest period provided grapes with pronounced phenolic maturity while preserving the necessary acidity that underpins balance in fine wine.
The 1995 Musigny Grand Cru exudes elegance, reflecting the finesse that is a hallmark of Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier’s craft. At first sip, it evokes a tapestry of layered complexity — red cherries interwoven with subtle earthy undertones and a whisper of spice. With time, it unveils deeper notes of mushroom and forest floor, buoyed by a vibrant mineral streak that conjures the vineyard's chalky soils.

Scores and tasting notes
(also known as the Chateau de Chambolle-Musigny) Frederic Mugnier had just recently bottled his 1995s when I visited him in June, and he was reluctant to allow me to taste them. Two of the wines were showing admirably well and deserve to be mentioned. Visually, Mugnier's Musigny was slightly lighter in color than his Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, but its highly expressive bouquet of ripe cassis, wild blueberries, blackberries and flowers served as a prelude to the powerful flavors that would emerge. An explosive burst of layered red and black cherries as well as notes of violets, stones and sweet mushrooms can be found in this superb wine's fleshy, full-bodied and sublimely long flavor profile.
