2000 Musigny Grand Cru
By Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier
2000 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Burgundy, France
In the pantheon of Burgundian majesty, the 2000 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier commands a rare reverence. A vintage that has matured into a confluence of grace and complexity, I've observed its progression meticulously since bottling.
Epochal Evolution: Investing in a Millennium Vintage
The turn of the millennium brought anticipation and, in the case of the 2000 vintage in Burgundy, delivered a quietly confident performance. Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, with its limited production and scrupulous vineyard management, unveiled a wine espousing the quintessence of Musigny – subtlety intertwined with depth.
The Distinctive Persona of 2000 Musigny Grand Cru
Cool, collected conditions throughout the growing season forestalled any overripeness in the fruit, allowing for a pristine expression of terroir. The result: a Musigny redolent with nuanced aromatics of ripe cherries and violets that flirt with earthier undertones and a delicate veil of oak. On the palate, one is met with an intricately woven tapestry of flavours – dark fruit core adorned with hints of truffle and a lingering minerality. The tannins have resolved sublimely, proffering an ethereal mouthfeel that only time can bestow.
The structure posits this 2000 venture as a prime candidate for those who are passionate about fine wines with enduring potential for appreciation in both sensory and investment terms. Encased within each bottle is an anthology of the year's climatic narrative, expressed through Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier's masterful winemaking.
Drawing upon decades in equating epicurean delight with astute investing, this 2000 Musigny Grand Cru encapsulates a venerable vintage that affirms its place in the portfolios of discerning collectors. The intersection where enological finesse meets prudent acquisition resides here – in the heart of one such bottle – patiently maturing within my own cellar and promising profound experiences for those patient enough to let history unfurl in the glass.

Scores and tasting notes
Mugnier’s millennial Musigny Grand Cru (that is my tongue-twister of the day) has a transparent bouquet with brilliant delineation, a nose where the spaces between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Light, brambly red fruit and cold limestone: not complex but very focused. The palate is pure and harmonious with no rough edges, a featherweight but athletic Musigny, with more persistency than the nose suggests. This is a delightful grand cru, although I would not cellar it long-term. Drink now-2019. Tasted November 2013.
