2001 Nuits St Georges aux Boudots from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

Immersed in the storied terroir of Burgundy, the 2001 Nuits St Georges aux Boudots from Domaine Leroy presents a connoisseur’s testament to the intricate dance of climate and craft. This vintage emerged from an auspicious alignment of conditions that deviated from Burgundian norms, producing a remarkable expression that continues to court the discerning palates of wine investors.

Unearthing Elegance: An Exceptional Year

The Burgundian year of 2001, shying away from the classic opulence of its surrounding vintages, seemed whispered into existence rather than pronounced. The region was beset by a cool summer that crescendoed into an Indian summer—a harbinger of hopeful harmonies revealed within the glass. The resulting vintage stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptive verve of Burgundy's vintners.

Terroir-Speaking Treasury

The nose teases with a tapestry of dark cherry interwoven with subtle hints of earthiness—a beguiling overture shadowing the complex libretto to follow. One can indulge in the poise and precision with which this Pinot Noir articulates its terroir; mineral accents are deftly underscored by a phalanx of firm yet supple tannins, allowing for an experience resonant with profundity.

Among the many noble acts this vintage performs is its meticulous balance—a poised équilibriste on a tightrope strung with time’s passage. Elegant traces of mature autumnal fruit preside, shepherded towards transcendence by whispers of spice and memories of forest floor underfoot—each sip an echo down the annals of Burgundy's living lore.

In the panorama of substantive asset classes, few can command the reverence stirred by such a stately vintage. Domaine Leroy has skillfully steered nature's variables to curate a vinous offering that steadfastly appreciates both in character and fiscal esteem. As time marches on, the 2001 Nuits St Georges aux Boudots remains a beacon for Burgundy enthusiasts and wine investment portfolios alike, ripening beyond its already lofty stature as one of Domaine Leroy's most perspicaciously crafted achievements.

Scores and tasting notes

Appealing red and black cherry aromas are found in the nose of the 2001 Nuits-St.-Georges Aux Boudots. This firm, tightly-wound wine reveals impressive quantities of dark fruit, excellent balance, and a finish that displays some wood tannin. Drink it between 2005 and 2010. Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy liked both the 2000 and 2001 vintages, stating that she was “rather pleased with the 2001s as they will bring lots of joy to those who drink them young” and that the 2000s “are candied fruit, reduction of fruit, the essence of fruit.” Many Burgundians chose to bottle their 2001 early in order to “trap” the fruit in the bottle, but Bize-Leroy beat them all to the punch, having completed the bottling process by early September, 2002. Typically an early bottler, Mme. Bize-Leroy felt that the 2001s would lose their fruit to either oxidation or the required sulfuring if left in the barrel for a longer elevage. Overall, Domaine Leroy’s 2001s are a success, though many were found to reveal stemmy, woody tannin in their finishes. If this characteristic melts away quickly, my scores on those wines will appear overly conservative. Importer: Martine’s Wines, San Raphael, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
